Inleiding
In 1912 naar ontwerp van C.J. van Spall in rationalistische trant uitgevoerd voorfiltergebouw behorend tot het duinwaterwinningcomplex van de voormalige Leidsche Duinwaterleidingmij uit 1930.
Omschrijving
Driebeukig (voor-)FILTERGEBOUW op rechthoekige plattegrond onder met dakleer gedekt zadeldak (verhoogde middenbeuk) en lessenaarsdak (zijbeuken). Gevels bestaande uit een betonskelet opgevuld met baksteen, op plint. Vensters deels voorzien van houten kozijnen, ijzeren roeden en betonnen waterdorpels en deels geheel vernieuwd in beton.
De indeling van de gevels is symmetrisch. Voorgevel (oost): gevel van de middenbeuk verticaal in drieeën geleed door betonnen banden. In de vlakken ertussen drie rondboogvormige vensters; een twintigruitsvenster geflankeerd door zestienruitsvensters. In de voorgevels van de zijbeuken rechthoekige twaalfruitsvensters. De gevel van de middenbeuk heeft een betonnen fronton bestaande uit drie spaarvelden met daarin het opschrift: ANNO, VOORFILTERS, 1912.
Zijgevels (noord en zuid) bestaan uit elf traveeën. In de gevel van de zijbeuk afwisselend zes dubbele houten deuren (gedeeltelijk vernieuwd) met segmentboogvormige zesruitsbovenlichten en vijf dubbele rechthoekige twaalfruitsvensters. In de gevel van de middenbeuk afwisselend zes enkele en vijf dubbele rondboogvormige negenruitsvensters.
Achtergevel (west) als voorgevel, echter zonder opschrift en betonnen fronton, maar met aanbouw uit 1955.
Interieur: nagenoeg gaaf interieur anno 1930, met onder meer de voorfilterbakken met installatie bestaande uit verticale beluchtingscompressoren en een terugspoelsysteem. In de middenbeuk een bijzondere kapconstructie van betonnen driescharnierspanten.
Waardering
Het voorfiltergebouw is van algemeen belang wegens bouwhistorische en typologische waarde vanwege de aanwezigheid van een gaaf interieur uit 1930 (filterbakken en beluchtingscompressoren) en vanwege de gaafheid in hoofdvorm, detaillering, materiaalgebruik van zowel in- als exterieur en als vroege, zeldzame en illustratieve vertegenwoordiger van één van de fasen van het drinkwaterproces in Nederland en vanwege de aanwezigheid van de bijzondere en weinig voorkomende kapconstuctie, bestaande uit in beton uitgevoerde driescharnierspanten.
Het voorfiltergebouw heeft voorts ensemblewaarde als functioneel-historisch en beeldondersteund onderdeel van het complex.

Three-aisle (pre-)FILTER BUILDING on rectangular plan under a gabled roof covered with roofing felt (raised middle aisle) and sloped roof (side aisles). Facades consisting of a concrete skeleton filled with brick, on plinth. Windows partly provided with wooden frames, iron bars and concrete drip mouldings and partly entirely renewed in concrete.
The division of the facades is symmetrical. Front facade (east): facade of the middle aisle vertically divided into three parts by concrete bands. In the surfaces between three round-arched windows; a twenty-pane window flanked by sixteen-pane windows. In the front facades of the side aisles rectangular twelve-pane windows. The facade of the middle aisle has a concrete pediment consisting of three spandrels with therein the inscription: ANNO, VOORFILTERS, 1912.
Side facades (north and south) consist of eleven bays. In the facade of the side aisle alternating six double wooden doors (partly renewed) with segment-arched six-pane fanlights and five double rectangular twelve-pane windows. In the facade of the middle aisle alternating six single and five double round-arched nine-pane windows.
Rear facade (west) as front facade, however without inscription and concrete pediment, but with extension from 1955.
Interior: virtually intact interior from 1930, including among others the pre-filter tanks with installation consisting of vertical ventilation compressors and a back-flushing system. In the middle aisle a special roof truss structure of concrete three-hinged arches.
Valuation
The pre-filter building is of general significance on account of construction-historical and typological value on account of the presence of an intact interior from 1930 (filter tanks and ventilation compressors) and on account of the integrity in main form, detailing, material use of both interior and exterior and as an early, rare and illustrative representative of one of the phases of the drinking water process in the Netherlands and on account of the presence of the special and rarely occurring roof truss structure, consisting of three-hinged arches executed in concrete.
The pre-filter building furthermore has ensemble value as a functionally-historical and visually-supporting component of the complex.
