Inleiding

Description
Introduction
COUNTRY HOUSE "Russendaal" in Eclectic style from 1864, presumed design by architect friar A. Slootmakers S.J. The house was built as a country residence or retreat of the Jesuits of the seminary Mariëndaal at Grave. The house lies in the middle of a trapezoidal park-like estate with many older trees including oaks and beeches. On the north side it borders the municipality of Grave. The estate is traversed from north to south by the Russendaalweg, to the west of this lies on an island the country house with to the east an ornamental garden with pond, greenhouse and small chapel niche. The front facade of the house faces east towards the ornamental garden.
Description:
Two-storey symmetrical house with mezzanine beneath a hipped roof covered with natural slate stone. The architecture displays the classical colossal order. Front facade five bays wide with side risalits, between which a veranda on the ground floor with above it a balcony supported by two square cast iron columns. The house has a low lower storey and a high upper storey. The arched wall openings on the ground floor have six-pane and on the upper storey eight-pane windows. The walling consists of hand-formed brick laid in cross bond with corner pilasters, cement plinth, cornice, frieze with consoles in which slot-shaped mezzanine windows with rounded corners. The consoles are provided with star-shaped sculpture with in the front facade two male heads. On the roof a hexagonal bell turret crowned by domed roofs and a wrought iron cross. The main entrance with stucco moulding on the south side of the house is simple in design. On the west side a conservatory beneath a flat roof from approximately 1970. The conservatory does not form part of the national monument. The layout of the house is authentic. In the hall a monumental spiral staircase with landing opening and in the corridor a service staircase with landings. The interior was renovated in 1990.
Appreciation
The country house Russendaal is of general importance because of cultural-historical value as an example of a country residence of a monastic order that functioned as an annex to the seminary at Grave, it has typological value because of the application of the country house form for a monastic building. It has architectural-historical value because of the simple Eclecticistic architecture within which references to a religious function are virtually entirely absent and has significance because of its place in the small oeuvre of friar-architect Slootmakers. It has been preserved intact and is extremely rare.
