Omschrijving complexonderdeel 1

Description of complex component 1

A detached MANOR HOUSE in neo-Renaissance style of two storeys with basement on an almost rectangular plan covered under a composite gabled roof tiled with Dutch tiles with the ridge parallel to the Amersfoorstseweg. The facades are built in brick, with mainly eight- and six-paned windows provided with Venetian blinds. The main volume of the manor house on the east or front side is six window bays wide. The central axis, on which the main entrance is positioned, is crowned by an in- and out-swinging gable. The entrance has a neo-Baroque, natural stone surround with fluted pilasters carrying a round-arched pediment. The pediment moulding is interrupted at the top by a smaller tympanum, in which a relief is set, consisting of a radiant sun in a blue field above a hill. In front of the entrance is a hardstone staircase which projects outward at the base. To the left of the entrance section is a stepped gable section two window bays wide. The stepped gable is crowned by a sculpture of a lion with shield. To the right of the entrance, the facade has a straight cornice-topped termination to the width of two window bays. Against the side facades of the main volume is a small building volume of one storey under a hipped roof, on which wrought-iron railings are affixed. In front of the left extension is a hardstone staircase conforming to the staircase before the main entrance.

The west or rear facade, which faces the Amersfoorstseweg, has a main volume six window bays wide, with the leftmost bay built up as a four-storey tower section under a hipped roof, on which a lantern on a square ground plan is set. The lantern has an in- and out-swinging hipped roof crown. The two window bays to the right of the tower have stepped gable endings. In front of this is a platform with steps. Two double terrace doors give access to the platform. The second window bay from the right has an out-swinging gable ending above a continuous drip moulding. The right side facade with tower section has two windows on the fourth storey. The left side facade consists of a stepped gable two window bays wide. The stepped gable is crowned by a sculpture of a lion with shield. To the right of this is the aforementioned extension of one storey on which a balcony.

The interior arrangement of the house has scarcely been altered. Originally most of the rooms of the manor house were embellished with objects from the extensive art collection of Schwartz's, consisting of among other things antique furniture, wall paintings and various interior components such as fireplaces and a choir screen. Nowadays the house has, on the piano nobile, a number of rooms which have been left intact at the wish of the Schwartz heirs. Here are several period rooms with predominantly seventeenth and eighteenth century furniture and art works. The former study, boudoir, salon, morning room and dining room are in original condition. The fireplaces, wall panelling and stucco ceilings are of significance.

Valuation

The manor house Zonheuvel, nowadays known under the name Maarten Maartenshuis, is of great cultural historical value because of the remarkable history of occupation and of architectural historical value as an example of a building type and style and well-preserved interior elements. Also of ensemble value in relation to the gatehouse and of importance because of the striking location on a high point of the Heuvelrug.
