Inleiding
STATION der derde klasse gebouwd in 1866-1867 in opdracht van de Staatsspoorwegen en vermoedelijk ontworpen door bouw- en werktuigbouwkunige K.H. van Brederode in de stijl van het Waterstaatsclassicisme. Het bestek (met nummer 271) werd uitgegeven door het Ministerie van Binnenlandsche Zaken, afdeling Waterstaat. In de hal van het station een gevelsteen: "De eerste steen is gelegd den 4n juny 1867 door den heer A.Th. Hosteyn burgemeester van Meppel". Daaronder een steen: "1982 renovatie station Meppel". Bij die renovatie zijn vooral interne wijzigingen uitgevoerd. De bescherming omvat het station met de aangebouwde perron-overkapping aan de oostzijde.
Omschrijving
Sation aan doorgaande spoorlijn bestaande uit een hoge middenrisaliet versierd met pilasters, kroonlijst en een fronton (oorspronkelijk versierd) waarin een uurwerk is geplaatst. Aan weerszijden van de risaliet staat een lage vleugel met hoekpilasters. Het middenstuk heeft achter het fronton een flauw hellend zadeldak, de beide zijvleugels hebben een met pannen bedekt zadeldak evenwijdig aan het spoor. Gevelopbouw met natuurstenen plint, gepleisterde gevels, venster- en deuropeningen met gebogen bovendorpels. Aan de oostzijde een aangebouwde perronoverkapping die rust op tien achtkantige gietijzeren, op klassieke orde geinspireerde, kolommen die aan bovenzijde uitlopen in aangeklonken sierstukken.

Description
Station on through railway line consisting of a high central projection decorated with pilasters, cornice and a pediment (originally decorated) in which a clock is placed. On both sides of the projection stands a low wing with corner pilasters. The central section has behind the pediment a gently sloping gabled roof, both side wings have a gabled roof tiled with tiles parallel to the track. Facade construction with natural stone plinth, plastered facades, window and door openings with curved upper thresholds. On the east side an attached platform canopy resting on ten octagonal cast-iron columns inspired by classical order which at the top terminate in riveted ornamental pieces.
