Inleiding
Gebouwd in 1933 als 'twee winkelhuizen met twee bovenwoningen' in opdracht van A.J. Danser (Amsterdam) en naar ontwerp van D.J. Lok (Meppel). Het is een voorbeeld van Interbellum Architectuur waarbij invloeden merkbaar zijn van de Amsterdamse School, de Stijl en de Haagse School.
Omschrijving
Drie bouwlagen onder plat, in baksteen opgetrokken waarbij de begane grond gedomineerd wordt door de etalagepuien bestaande uit een bekleding van zwart marmeren platen en een constructie van hout en staal voor de royale vensters. Kozijnen en deuren in gelakt hout neigend naar Amsterdamse School. De bovenlichten van de etalagepui zijn voorzien van gekleurd glas-in-lood (met Stijl-invloed). Links entree naar de bovenwoning, daarnaast een etalagepui, een portiek, een tweede etalagepui en een ruimer portiek waar ook de toegangsdeur naar de tweede woning is. In dit gedeelte geglazuurde tegels op vloer en zijwand. Het bovenhuis is in een meer strakke Haagse School-trant gebouwd en kent een symmetrische indeling met een overhoeks geplaatste, uitkragende middenas en een licht uitspringend middenstuk. Aan weerskanten een hangend erker met oorspronkelijk kozijnhout en glas-in-lood in de bovenlichten; dakrand met azuurkleurige tegels bekleed. Aan de buitenkant een rechtgesloten venster met glas-in-lood bovenlicht. De bovenste bouwlaag heeft eenvoudiger rechtgesloten vensters. De dakrand is aangezet met een geel geglazuurde steen waarbovenop de zwart geglazuurde tegelrand is bevestigd.
Waardering
Winkels met bovenwoningen van architectuurhistorisch en stedebouwkundig belang vanwege de typologie, de vormgeving, het materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek alsmede vanwege de beeldbepalende ligging aan het Zuideinde (een waardevol stadsgezicht). Gaaf en zeker daardoor voor de regio zeldzaam.

Description
Three storeys under flat roof, built up in brick with the ground floor dominated by the shop fronts consisting of a cladding of black marble plates and a structure of wood and steel for the generous windows. Frames and doors in lacquered wood inclining towards the Amsterdam School. The fanlights of the shop front are provided with coloured stained glass (with De Stijl influence). On the left entrance to the apartment, next to it a shop front, a vestibule, a second shop front and a larger vestibule where also the entrance door to the second dwelling is. In this section glazed tiles on floor and side wall. The upper storey is built in a more austere Hague School style and has a symmetrical arrangement with an off-corner placed, cantilevered central axis and a slightly projecting central section. On both sides a suspended bay window with original frame wood and stained glass in the fanlights; roof edge clad with azure-coloured tiles. On the outside a right-angled window with stained glass fanlight. The upper storey has simpler right-angled windows. The roof edge is set with a yellow glazed brick upon which the black glazed tile edge is attached.
Valuation
Shops with apartments above of architectural-historical and urban design importance due to the typology, the design, the use of materials and the ornaments as well as due to the image-determining location on the South End (a valuable urban scene). Intact and certainly thereby rare for the region.
