Inleiding
Ophaalbrug (Hollandse type) over de Hoogeveensche Vaart gebouwd in 1913 ter vervanging van de Berebrug en sindsdien aangeduid als de Zuiderbrug. Opdrachtgever en ontwerper was de gemeente Meppel (de gemeente stelde bestek en voorwaarden op). De bouw werd uitgevoerd door H. Damer aannemer te Meppel) voor wat betreft de brughoofden; de brug zelf werd geleverd en opgezet door de stoomsmederij B. van der Hoff uit Utrecht. De bescherming betreft zowel de brughoofden als de bruglantaarns en de brug.

Brug bestemd voor gewoon verkeer met een middengedeelte voor auto's (3,53 meter) en aan beide zijden voetpaden (0,75 meter); vrije hoogte van 4,70 meter. De opening tussen de landhoofden is 6,13 meter. Aan beide zijden opgemetselde landhoofden; zuidzijde met hardstenen afdekplaten. Vier bruglantaarns waarvan de twee zuidelijk geplaatst zijn op de uitkragende hardstenen sluitsteen van doorstroomopening. Giet- en smeedijzeren hekwerk. De brug is geheel geklonken en bestaat uit twee hameistijlen (I-balk met een U-profiel tegen de flenzen) waartussen een hameiregel (I-profiel met onderhangend vakwerk in X-patroon). De hameipoort wordt in de lengterichting van de brug gesteund door twee schoren. De balans rust op consoles aan de hameistijlen. Zij heeft twee samengestelde volwandige priemen met een I-doorsnede. De priemen worden aan de achterzijde gekoppeld middels de balanskist en diagonale trekstangen. De hangstaven zijn uitgevoerd als twee gekoppelde strippen. De brug wordt met de hand bewogen door middel van een cirkelvormige heugelstang aan de oostelijke hameistijl. Hekwerk op de val. Op de hameistijl een naamplaat met B. v.d. Hoff Stoomsmederij Utrecht.
