Inleiding
Gebouwd in 1910 in een neorenaissancistische stijl volgens bestek als 'Kantongerecht en Ontvangkantoor der directe belastingen enz.' in opdracht van het ministerie van Justitie naar ontwerp van W.C. Metzelaar. Naast de hoofdentree zit een zandstenen plaquette met de volledige functie-aanduiding: Kantongerecht, Kantoor der registratie, zegel en successierechten der Domeinen en der Vermogensbelasting, Boeten en Gerechtskosten. Kantoor der Belastingen - Invoerrechten en Accijnzen (Meppel). Kantoor der Directe Belastingen en Accijnzen (Buitengemeenten). Aan de linkerkant is het kantongerecht gekoppeld aan de conciërgewoning. Het gebouw heeft intern voor de verschillende dienstruimten een verbouwing ondergaan; de hoofdindeling is nauwelijks aangetast.
Omschrijving
Evenwijdig aan de weg gelegen kantongerecht bestaande uit twee bouwlagen gedekt door een afgeplat en samengesteld schilddak belegd met leien; aan achterzijde deels met plat; schoorstenen; dakkapellen met kroonlijst en fronton. Het frontgebouw heeft een symmetrische opzet met een vooruitspringend middenstuk bekroond met een opgemetseld dakkapel voorzien van hardstenen klauwstukken en sierstukken. Gevelopbouw met hardstenen plint, bakstenen opbouw met zandstenen waterlijsten en speklagen; boogfries met uitkragende risalieten en natuurstenen elementen (waaronder gemeentenamen en bouwjaar: Meppel, Havelte, Vledder, De Wijk, Anno, 1910, Ruinerwold, Dwingeloo, Diever en Nijeveen); geprofileerde goot. Korfboogvormige drielichtsvensters (voorzien van middenstijlen en wisseldorpels) met hardstenen onderdorpels, aanzet- en gedecoreerde sluitstenen. Toegangsdeur in het terugliggende gedeelte aan de linkerkant geplaatst en bestaande uit een dubbele teakhouten paneeldeur met tongnaald en smeedijzeren sierhekjes; getoogde bovendorpel en daarboven een drieruits bovenlicht. Rechts van de deur zit in de sprong een plaquette (zie hierboven). Zij- en achtergevels zijn soberder. Zijgevels onder meer met rondboogvensters; rechterzijgevel met verbreding met toegangsdeur onder plat en daarachter twee bouwlagen onder schilddak; rondboogvenster en een hoog geplaatst rechtgesloten venster waarachter de zoldertrap. Achtergevel (gedeelte met platte aanbouw) met rechtgesloten drielichtsvensters (voorzien van middenstijlen en wisseldorpels) op de begane grond voorzien van getoogde hanekam. Rechts een lagere platte aanbouw waarin twee keer drie wc-vensters; in het hoofdvolume zelf twee rondboogvensters (trappenhuis).
INTERIEUR. Tochtportaal met dubbele tochtdeur voorzien van zij- en bovenlichten op hardstenen neuten en onderdorpel. Gangen met een granito-vloer voorzien van sierranden; lambrisering met marmeren plint, gele en gebroken wit geglazuurde steen aan bovenzijde afgezet met marmeren rand. In hoek geplaatste hardstenen waterplaats. Hardstenen trap voorzien van giet- en smeedijzeren spijlen (M. Boddendijk Smid Meppel) afgedekt door eiken leuning. Grenen paneeldeuren met omlijsting en ruimte voor naamplaatjes aan bovenzijde. Trappenhuis met glas-in-lood ramen.

District court situated parallel to the road consisting of two storeys covered by a flattened and composite hipped roof with slate covering; on the rear side partly with flat roof; chimneys; roof dormers with cornice and pediment. The front building has a symmetrical layout with a projecting central section crowned with a built-up roof dormer provided with stone corner stones and ornamental pieces. Facade construction with stone plinth, brick construction with sandstone drip mouldings and bond courses; arch frieze with projecting pilasters and natural stone elements (including municipality names and building year: Meppel, Havelte, Vledder, De Wijk, Anno, 1910, Ruinerwold, Dwingeloo, Diever and Nijeveen); moulded gutter. Basket-arch-shaped three-light windows (provided with mullions and alternating sills) with stone window sills, abutments and decorated keystones. Entrance door placed in the recessed section on the left and consisting of a double teak wood panelled door with tongue and groove joinery and wrought iron ornamental grilles; arched upper sill and above it a three-pane fanlight. To the right of the door is a plaque in the projection (see above). Side and rear facades are more austere. Side facades among others with rounded arch windows; right side facade with extension with entrance door under flat roof and behind it two storeys under hipped roof; rounded arch window and a high-placed rectangular window behind which the attic stairs. Rear facade (section with flat extension) with rectangular three-light windows (provided with mullions and alternating sills) on the ground floor provided with arched decorative weather mouldings. To the right a lower flat extension containing two rows of three w.c. windows; in the main volume itself two rounded arch windows (stairwell).
INTERIOR. Draught vestibule with double draught door provided with side and fanlights on stone thresholds and lower sill. Corridors with granito flooring provided with ornamental borders; wall wainscoting with marble plinth, yellow and broken white glazed stone finished at the top with marble border. Water tap in corner positioned in stone. Stone staircase provided with cast and wrought iron balusters (M. Boddendijk Blacksmith Meppel) covered by oak handrail. Pine panelled doors with surround and space for nameplates at the top. Stairwell with leaded glass windows.
