Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The CASTLE GROUNDS of the former castle Makken consist of a terrain with rectangular ground plan of approximately 200 (N-S) by 100 (E-W) metres, of which the southwestern corner is slightly cut off by the construction of the railway line (completed in 1883). The terrain is bounded on all sides by the old moats, which on the eastern side connect with the old Vierlingsbeek, now called Loobeek or Drainage Canal. The boundaries of the protected terrain are on the outer talus sides as viewed from the castle. The structures of barn (XIX) and castle farm (1955) fall outside the protection.
Description
The terrain consists of a northern and a southern section, of approximately equal size, visually separated by the east-west oriented building volume of the outer ward. Both sections of terrain consist of grassland, with locally field-margin vegetation and some solitary trees, including on the northern section a horse chestnut with a trunk circumference of approximately 4.5 metres. In both the southern and northern sections old moat traces are still visible at the location of remaining structures. At the location of the old water castle the terrain slopes towards the now filled-in moats (north and south respectively 8.5 and 13 metres wide). According to the chromo-topographic map, sheet 632, revised in 1913, the southern moat was still open in 1913. Both former moats enclose the terrain (43 x 38 metres, approximately 1.5 metres below the ground level of the surrounding meadows), within which the foundations of the water castle must be located. The southern moat of the castle runs recognisably through the terrain to beyond the outer ward. The former inner terrain of the outer ward is separated by a partially double-brick built, approximately 1 metre high steep edge of the castle terrain. On the castle grounds is the remaining half of the old outer ward, as well as the barn located to the east of it (with older core, northern facade on old foundations) and the castle farm largely rebuilt in 1955 (with locally old masonry). It is currently unknown what wall remains are still present in the terrain. At some places the remains of walls and foundations appear at the surface, such as directly east of the remaining part of the outer ward.
