Omschrijving
Inleiding
- als voorbeeld van de rond 1900 opkomende openbare parken;
- als voorbeeld van het vroeg twintigste-eeuwse verschijnsel van een door een fabrikant aangelegd volkspark;
- als goed voorbeeld van de ontwikkeling in de parkarchitectuur van het begin van de twintigste eeuw waarbij parken werden aangelegd waarin gebouwen met culturele functies werden opgenomen en waarin binnen een landschappelijk aangelegd geheel geometrische delen werden aangelegd;
- als goed voorbeeld van de stijl van parkaanleg in het begin van de twintigste eeuw en als zodanig een vrijwel gaaf gebleven en daardoor zeldzame aanleg;
- als goed voorbeeld van een parkaanleg binnen het oeuvre van L.A. Springer en als zodanig een vrijwel gave en daardoor zeldzaam geworden aanleg;

Description
Introduction
The VOLKSPARK is a typical landscape park with changes in level, groups of trees and various types of solitary trees in lawns, with woodland park accessed by footpaths and with a pond with bridge and island.
The park consists of two parts. On the highest part of the terrain lies a geometrically designed garden, ordered along the axis between Park Building (west) and Music Pavilion (east). Around it (mainly in the northern direction) a landscape-designed section, largely enclosed by park woodland, with a pond (which is situated about three metres lower), groups of trees and shrubs, curved paths, lawn and farmhouse. In one of the woodland plots south of the Park Building stands an aviary, edged with shrubs and trees.
The trees in the park consist of native species and exotics, including special species. The paths in the park are, unless otherwise stated, surfaced with gravel.
Description
North of the Park Building lies to the west an open grassfield with an almost oval shape, surrounded by a winding footpath that connects to the other paths in the park. Around and on the grassfield stand solitary trees, groups of trees and shrubs. Along the west side, against the boundary of the park, stands a tree line of trees and shrubs. East of the meadow stands, surrounded by paths, a memorial monument, visible from all sides.
North of the Park Building lie to the east the farmhouse and, north of that, the pond. The farmhouse is situated east of the memorial monument and dates from before the park was laid out. The meadow around it extends to the eastern boundary of the park and is enclosed with a fence.
Northeast of the Park Building lies an elongated pond with curved shorelines. Its length direction is northeast. Along the west side of the pond runs a winding footpath along which stand solitary trees, groups of trees and shrubs. This path connects to the path around the meadow and to a path along the northern boundary of the park. To the northeast the pond narrows and is spanned by a bridge, after which it becomes wide enough again in the northeastern corner of the park to provide space for a small island. The shape of the pond gives the illusion that the water extends outside the park. Along the entire northern boundary of the park stands a tree line of trees and shrubs.
The enclosed garden east of the Park Building is designed around a symmetrical axis between the east facade of the Park Building and the music pavilion. East of the Park Building lies an asphalt-surfaced drive, which connects to the Oosterhofweg. This connects to the Westerhofsweg south of the park and to the path around the meadow north of the Park Building. At the access from the Westerhofsweg stands an access gate. In the lawn east of this drive, in the symmetrical axis and on either side of it, lie masonry steps of six treads that bridge a height difference of approximately 0.60 metres. The slope between the steps is laid out as a flower bed. Along the lower side of the slope (east side) runs a path that connects to the paths that lead from the outer steps in an easterly direction to the boundary of the park. Between this path and the path for the music pavilion lies a lawn. Directly in front of the music pavilion stands a planting of low shrubs. In the lawn stand on the four corners and midway along the north and south sides topiary-clipped holly shrubs in columnar form. Along the west side of the lawn on either side of the axis and between the holly shrubs lie narrow, elongated flower beds. In the main axis originally lay a path with flower beds in the lawn on either side. Now lies in the axis an elongated rose bed. Behind the music pavilion and to the north and south of the lawn stand thickets of trees and shrubs with paths. The whole of lawn, music pavilion and surrounding planting is enclosed on the north, south and east sides by a circular path that leads out onto the Albertsdijk.
In the tree and shrub group on that side is located the bird house. Around the aviary runs a path that connects to the drive.
Valuation
Park, laid out around 1920 according to the design of landscape architect L.A. Springer, of cultural-historical and garden-historical value:
- as an example of the public parks emerging around 1900;
- as an example of the early twentieth-century phenomenon of a people's park laid out by a manufacturer;
- as a good example of the development in park architecture at the beginning of the twentieth century, in which parks were laid out in which buildings with cultural functions were incorporated and in which geometric parts were laid out within a landscape-designed whole;
- as a good example of the style of park layout at the beginning of the twentieth century and as such a virtually intact and thereby rare design;
- as a good example of a park layout within the oeuvre of L.A. Springer and as such a virtually intact and thereby rare design;
- because of the aesthetic qualities of L.A. Springer's original design (namely the connection of park to buildings with the use of sight lines and a symmetrical axis, the careful positioning of the buildings and components within the park) which have been virtually preserved intact.
