Inleiding

Introduction

The PARK BUILDING from 1914, designed by Karel Muller, is executed predominantly in Dutch neo-Renaissance style (brickwork, cross windows and round windows, stuccoed ashlar blocks and matching decoration). Influences from expressionist German architecture of the time of its establishment are also evident, such as the form of the tower crown and of the projecting bays in the side facades. Although the interior has undergone substantial modernisation, the gallery on the east facade has been partially closed in, and an extension has been added to the south facade, the park building remains of considerable monumental significance.

Description

The park building is constructed on an L-shaped ground plan over two storeys; the hipped roofs are covered with tiles in Dutch bond and have a zinc ridge. The long arm of the L forms the main body; the adjoining short arm is lower than the long one. An extension was made on the north facade during construction and on the south facade recently.

The east facade is formed on the right by the end gable of the main body (3 bays) and on the left by a long facade of the extension (4 bays). Of the end gable of the main body, the middle bay is widened, projects forward, and is provided with a double window arrangement on the upper storey. These two segmental arch cross windows are separated from each other by a brick mullion.

The bay is crowned by a dormer with a stepped gable. In the stepped gable a sandstone plaque has been placed with "Parkgebouw" in bas-relief.

From the fourth (middle) bay rises a tower, crowned with a helm roof on which stands a roof turret with bell beneath an inward-curved spire. On the east side a clock face, with an ornamental arch frieze in brickwork around it. In the tower bay and the remaining bays on the upper storey likewise cross windows beneath segmental arch lintel. On the ground floor a veranda has been constructed across the full width of the front facade and part of the north facade. The veranda canopy is supported on Tuscan columns with hardstone capitals and bases. The veranda has been partially closed in recently.

In the north facade the even-numbered bays project forward. These 5 projections are crowned by dormers with stepped gable and a round window. The first and last projections have an oval window on the upper storey. All other projections and intermediate bays have a cross window on the upper storey. The facade is closed horizontally by a band with decorative brickwork. The middle 3 bays have at the height of this band a three-light window. The rightmost bay has two round windows identical to the fanlights of the cross windows on the upper storey.

The west facade is virtually blank, as it houses the stage of the theatre hall. On the upper storey three round windows as in the north facade.

The interior of the park building has undergone substantial modernisation. The theatre hall is still present.

Significance

The park building is of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning significance because of:

- its (original) function.

- the quality of the design and the place it occupies within K. Muller's oeuvre.

- the rarity of the building type.

- the spatial and functional relationship with the park and the other objects within it.
