Inleiding

Elke beuk is twee traveeën breed.

Introduction

WAREHOUSES and OFFICE for the use of the harbour master, locally known as the "Petotjohloods", built circa 1850. The warehouses, constructed in an eclectic style, are situated on the south-west side of Het Nieuwe Diep.

N.B. The attic storey was damaged by fire during the Second World War, as a result of which the roof (roof trusses, battens and tiles) had to be renewed. The wooden roof truss structures (the principal rafters) were charred black, but remained structurally intact. The garage door in the left side facade falls outside the protection. In 1995, the warehouses were in use by the municipal harbour service and by various businesses.

Description

Building on a rectangular ground plan, consisting of a three-aisle building volume of one storey under three gabled roofs with Dutch tiles. The ridge lines of the gabled roofs are perpendicular to Het Nieuwe Diep. The original principal rafters in the three roof structures are still present. The facades are constructed in red brick, with detailing in yellow brick (banding, round arches and arch friezes). In various places in the brickwork, wrought iron ornamental wall anchors and wall ties of rod anchors are visible. Unless otherwise stated, drip moulds, springers and keystones of the round arches are made of hardstone.

The front facade (NE) consists of the three gable ends of the aisles. The front facade has corner pilasters and two pilasters on either side of the central aisle. Each aisle is two bays wide. The two left aisles contain in both bays a round arch-shaped door with double clamped door and wrought iron hinges and locks, the right aisle contains two round arch-shaped wooden cross windows with multiple-light glazing bars. This right aisle has a rendered plinth. In each aisle, in the gable end, a rectangular wooden window with small-pane glazing bars and brick drip mould has been installed. The pilasters bear a round arch frieze per aisle. The two pilasters on either side of the central aisle are emphasized by a cast iron half-column or downpipe placed against it. These half-columns have a fluted shaft, fantasy capital and French lily decoration. The gable ends are finished with simply profiled wooden barges.

The left side facade (SE) has six original window axes, five of which contain a rectangular sash window with multiple-light glazing bars and one contains a rectangular clamped door with fanlight. The windows have brick drip moulds.

The rear facade (SW) has in the three gable ends a rectangular window with brick drip mould and has simple barges. The most southerly aisle still has three original window axes with wooden sash windows, the most northerly aisle has four high-placed rectangular windows.

The right side facade (NW) has a rendered plinth and has six window axes, four of which contain a rectangular wooden four-light sash window with two-light fanlight. The third axis from the left contains a rectangular clamped double door, the axis at the far right contains a double clamped round arch door.

In the interior, the original load-bearing construction of rows of posts is still partially present.

Valuation

The building is of general interest from a cultural and architectural historical perspective as an example of a well-preserved warehouse with office from the middle of the 19th century in eclectic style. Furthermore, the building has group value through its location against the water barrier of Het Nieuwe Diep and through its functional relationship with the former building for the pilot service (now customs office, address: Het Nieuwe Diep 21, 23, 25) and with the Rijkswerf Willemsoord.
