Inleiding

Introduction

STEAM ENGINE HOUSE, built in the first construction phase between 1813 and 1823, locally known as building 47, also called "the grain warehouse". The building was designed by Jan Blanken Jansz. in neo-classical style. The building originally served to provide the energy needed for pumping dry the old dock (dock I). The steam engine house is situated to the west and in line with the old dock. The building is located on the west side of the Rijkswerf Willemsoord complex and together with the residence for the police officer and the buildings numbered 1, 28, 29, 52 and 60 forms the core components of the western facade of the Rijkswerf. N.B. In 1862 the steam engine house had become redundant due to the construction of a new steam engine house at dock II and the building was converted for other functions. It was adapted as an iron magazine and the storeys were fitted out as grain storage spaces for the naval bakery. In 1889 the ground floor rooms were also designated for grain storage. Subsequently the building was also called the "grain warehouse", even when no grain was being stored there anymore. Between 1939 and 1944 the building received reinforced concrete floors and partitions (1939). The wooden roof truss structure was also replaced by a reinforced concrete construction (1942). Part of the ground floor was fitted out as a telephone exchange (1939).

The extensions on the north and south sides are not protected.

Description

A building erected on a rectangular ground plan, consisting of three storeys under a hipped roof.

The facades were originally erected in red brick above a projecting ashlar base. The rusticated corner pilasters and stone bands were also of ashlar. The semi-circular wooden pivot windows had ashlar voussoirs and ashlar drip mouldings. The entrances on the ground floor had semi-circular arches of ashlar blocks. After in the period 1940-1945 the outer facades were provided with a reinforced concrete frame, the facades were finished with a layer of sprayed concrete.

The long facades (west and east) are three bays wide and contained originally on the ground floor three entrances, on the first and second storey three semi-circular windows. The windows thereby decreased in size per storey. In the roof pitches of the east and west sides there were originally three roof dormers under inset gabled roofs.

The end facades (north and south) are also three bays wide. The original arrangement and detailing was approximately the same as that of the long facades. The side facades originally probably had no entrances.

Most windows in the long and end facades have been blocked up.

Valuation

The building is of general importance as a historic functional principal component of the Rijkswerf Willemsoord complex. Moreover, the building is of importance from a cultural and architectural-historical perspective as an example of a steam engine house built in neo-classical style in the first half of the 19th century. By its building height and by its location on the western edge of the Rijkswerf site, the building, together with the residence for the police officer and the buildings numbered 1, 28, 29, 52 and 60, has distinctive value for the appearance of the Rijkswerf from the west side.
