Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Stone DRY DOCK, called dock II or new dry dock, from the period 1857-1866. The dock is situated on the southwestern compartment of the Rijkswerf Willemsoord complex on a diagonal axis (from northeast to southwest). The dock could be closed by a floating gate (bateau-porte) which has since been replaced. The dock also includes a sight rail.
N.B. The dock was constructed due to the growth of the navy and the associated ship maintenance. In June 1856 a dock commission began preparatory work and the design of the construction of a new dry dock. After study trips to France and England it was decided that the length should be at least 110 metres. On 23 March 1857 work began in the southwestern corner of the shipyard. On 28 May 1866 the dock was put into operation. The original lock gates were replaced in the 20th century.
Description
Dry dock with an elongated ground plan, situated along a diagonal axis (from northeast to southwest). The entrance to the dock is located in the southwestern corner of the wet dock. The short rear side of the dock (southwest) is rounded. The length of the dock is approximately 114 metres, the width at ground level is approximately 23 metres, the depth above the blocks was originally approximately 5.5 metres (and is 8 metres below normal high water). The dock floor is laid on a pile foundation on which a wooden framework was placed. The width of the dock decreases in steps from ground level to dock floor level. The quay walls and the abutment edges of the berths are constructed of hard stone, the remaining parts of the dock walls are of brick.
The dock also includes a wooden sight rail, placed on the shore in line with the long central axis of the dock.
Valuation
The dock is of general significance as a historically functional main component of the Rijkswerf Willemsoord complex. Furthermore, the object is of general significance from a cultural-historical, architectural-historical and constructive perspective as a well-preserved and rare example of a dry dock built in the second half of the 19th century.
