Inleiding
De op de hoek van de Hortensialaan en de Mimosastraat gebouwde Ambachtsschool is in 1931-1932 ontworpen door de architecten A. Baart uit Leeuwarden en L. Krook, voormalig stadsarchitect van Zwolle. Baart heeft een soortgelijke school in Leeuwarden gebouwd. Krook heeft diverse scholen in Zwolle gebouwd en is in 1930 als stadsarchitect opgevolgd door J.G. Wiebenga. In hoeverre die invloed op het ontwerp heeft gehad is niet na te gaan, de betonconstructie doet wel een inbreng van Wiebenga vermoeden. Beschrijving Pand op L-vormige plattegrond, opgetrokken in beton en baksteen. De buitenhoek van de L is strek plastisch vormgegeven. Drie bouwlagen onder platte daken met keramische trimrand. Gevels met horizontale stroken baksteen, rood op de begane grond en geel op de verdiepingen. Brede rechthoekige stalen vensters met uitvalramen, met betonnen lateien, gescheiden door smalle bakstenen muurdammen. De gevel Mimosastraat heeft op de begane grond zwartgeglazuurde steen en op de verdipeingen gele baksteen. De kopgevel is symmetrisch met een geheel in glas uitgevoerde bovenste verdieping van een klaslokaal. De hoek van de L toont het trappenhuis met hoge vertical venstersen een ingang onder betonnen luifel. A-symmetrische hoekoplossing met veelzijdige erkers, halfronde uitgemetselde schoorsteen en lagere aanbouw waarin blauwe tegels zijn verwerkt. De plattegrond is opgebouwd met een betonskelet. De ruimten tussen de betonconstructie zijn in principe vrij indeelbaar. In de L is het trappenhuis, met tegels en smeedijzeren hekken, gesitueerd vanwaaruit twee lange rechte gangen de beide bouwdelen ingaan. Ter zijde hiervan bevinden zich de klaslokalen.
