Inleiding

Introduction

'VILLA Elisabeth', designed in 1895 by architect Gerrit Beltman sr. (Enschede) in the eclectic architectural style with Dutch Neo-Renaissance, Gothic and Chalet style elements. The client was Albert Spanjaard, the textile manufacturer in Borne. Villa Elisabeth is located in the centre of Borne opposite a fine double dwelling house (Grotestraat 138, 140 / national monument number BN 40). The villa was taken into use as a town hall in 1930. The later outbuildings and a roof dormer on the rear side and left side facade (S) still serve as reminders of this function; these outbuildings are of subsidiary importance for protection under national law. The interior has been altered.

Description

The villa is constructed over two storeys with outbuildings of one storey on a complex ground plan under a complex roof covered with slate, truncated hipped roof with roof dormers. The roof projects far over carved wooden consoles. Five small roof dormers with wind vane, bargeboard and tie beam are placed in the roof surface. The facades are constructed in red brick above a grey-plastered plinth and furnished with white-plastered ashlar bands, corner pilasters with false joints, junction stones and voussoir blocks and window surrounds. All facades are subdivided into three bays. The windows and blank wall panels are for the most part placed beneath segmental arches with arch drums which are partly furnished with reliefs. In addition, the windows are terminated by plastered compressed pointed arches and stretches.

The outer bays of the front facade (E) project, the left one beneath a roof dormer with ornamental truss, the right one beneath a tower with truncated hipped roof. Against the left bay on the ground floor a three-sided oriel window. In the central bay is located the entrance, consisting of a double door with side lights and fanlight. Above the entrance three windows beneath compressed plastered pointed arches. On the upper floor and at the tower balconies with wooden balustrrades. The third storey of the tower consists of a loggia with on the front and right facade (E and N) three plastered pointed arches.

In the left side facade (S) the central bay projects beneath a roof dormer with ornamental truss and projecting half-hipped roof. For the right part of the facade a rectangular wooden conservatory beneath a flat roof has been built, with diamond-shaped finials in the wainscot and moulding around the fanlights. To the left against the conservatory a later outbuilding has been placed. In the left bay white-plastered blank wall panels.

Also in the rear facade (W) the central bay projects, but this time beneath a truncated hipped roof. In the right bay is located on the ground floor a white-plastered blank wall panel. For the left bay a connection with the new building has been added on the ground floor.

The right side facade (N) is - left to right - divided by the square tower, a far recessed bay and a projecting section with original outbuilding, both beneath a gabled roof with ornamental truss. Above the projecting section the roof dormer is furnished with a projecting half-hipped roof. To the left of the outbuilding and in front of the recessed bay is a flat outbuilding. In the white-plastered blank wall panel on the upper floor of the tower a relief has been incorporated.

- the significance of textile manufacturer Albert Spanjaard for the socio-economic history of Borne and the surrounding area
