Inleiding

Description
Introduction
MANSION, the "Klooster-esch", was designed in 1925 in circa 1800 architectural style by architect B. Vixseboxse Jr. on commission of D. Doedes Breuning-Ten Cate. The building is nowadays in use as an office.
To the right side facade (W) an extension has been added, which is of subordinate significance for the protection. Some original interior components have been preserved. The residential house is one of the remaining mansions on the Wierdensestraat, one of the most important approach roads of Almelo. Due to infrastructural interventions it now stands at a traffic junction with through roads on both the front and rear sides.
Description
The Klooster-Esch is cellaried and built over two storeys in red brick above a grey-plastered plinth on a rectangular ground plan under a hipped roof with anthracite-grey Dutch tiles. On all sides roof dormers with arched tops, wings and windows with small glazing bars are placed in the roof. On the ridge two chimneys with flat overhanging coping stones. The roof gutter overhangs above a Bentheimer sandstone cornice. The facades are articulated by large windows with fanlights and small glazing bars below string courses and above sandstone drip moulds. The front facade (N) has eight window axes. The left window axis is set far back, giving the front facade a symmetrical appearance. The central three of the remaining seven window axes in the front facade risalite beneath a pediment.
In the tympanum an oval window with radial glazing bar division in a sandstone surround is placed, in the cornice three garlands. In front of the risalite a staircase is built between two sandstone pilasters providing access to the masonry platform with a balustrade of masonry and sandstone. Below a balcony with the same balustrade on double Doric columns is the door with two side lights with ornamental wrought-ironwork between two twelve-light windows.
Also in the rear facade (S) the centre is emphasized by a risalite with a pediment, in which this time an arched window. On the large rectangular bays on either side of the risalite balconies with balustrades as in the front facade. On the ground floor of the risalite are the garden doors, above them a sandstone plaque with the name of the house within a laurel wreath. In the right side facade (W) the outer of the three window axes are occupied by curved bay sections spanning two storeys. On the ground floor of the central window axis a sandstone plaque with the building year in a cartouche. In the house among others the tiled chimney breast in the garden room, the woodwork, chimney breast and built-in cupboards in the study and the stair handrails and wainscoting in the stairwell have been preserved.
Valuation
The mansion is of cultural, architectural-historical and urban planning significance because of:
- the significance of the manufacturer family Breuning-Ten Cate for the socio-economic history of Almelo
- the circa 1800 design
- the prominent location of the building at two through roads and a traffic roundabout
