Inleiding
Monumentaal vrijstaand HERENHUIS uit circa 1890 in een eclectische bouwstijl met op Franse voorbeelden gebaseerde neo-renaissance detaillering. Het huis is gebouwd in opdracht van de Almelose textielfabrikant H.E. ten Cate. Het pand staat op de hoek van de Wierdensestraat en de Burg. Raveslootsingel langs de spoorlijn. De oorspronkelijke eenheid van de Wierdensestraat, ooit de belangrijkste invalsweg vanuit het westen, is door de aanleg van de tunnel onder het spoor ernstig verstoord. Dit herenhuis herinnert aan de oorspronkelijke grandeur van de straat.
Omschrijving Groot pand van twee bouwlagen op samengestelde plattegrond onder een afgeknot schilddak met leien in Maasdekking. De gevels zijn boven een hoge hardstenen plint opgetrokken in bruine baksteen en geleed met witte gepleisterde speklagen en geprofileerde natuurstenen cordonlijsten. De gepleisterde hoeklisenen zijn ter hoogte van de speklagen versierd met diamantkoppen. Het omgaande gepleisterde fries is boven de vensterassen van de voor- en rechter zijgevel (N en W) gedecoreerd met cassettes en festoenen tussen geprofileerde consoles. De geprofileerde overstekende kroonlijst rust op kleine consoles. De hanekammen en bogen boven de vensters zijn in rode baksteen uitgevoerd en versierd met witte stenen, al dan niet met diamantkop of reliëfversiering. Onder de verdiepingsvensters schijnbalustrades van kleine gedraaide balusters. De met aedicula omlijstte ingang bevindt zich in de middelste vensteras van de voorgevel (N) tussen twee hoekrisalieten.
De aedicula bestaat uit halfzuilen met sokkels en fantasiekapitelen onder een hoofdgestel en een gebroken fronton tussen siervazen. De met houtsnijwerk versierde dubbele deur heeft een halfrond bovenlicht met gebeeldhouwde leeuwekop op de sluitsteen. De smalle vensters met frontonbekroning aan weerszijden van de entree zijn voorzien van siersmeedijzeren diefijzers. Het recht gesloten drielichtvenster boven de ingang heeft een gepleisterde frontonbekroning tussen gemetselde segmentboogjes. De driezijdige erker tegen het rechter risaliet heeft gepleisterde hoekpilasters met fantasiekapitelen onder een gedecoreerd fries. De erkervensters hebben een halfrond bovenlicht. Op de erker een balkonbalustrade met gedraaide balusters. De linker risaliet heeft een afgesnoten hoek met vensteras. De teruggelegen middenas wordt in het dakschild bekroond door een afgeknot steil tentdak met een gepleisterde dakkapel. De gepleisterde dakkapel is uitgevoerd met klauwstukken, pilasters en een frontonbekroning in de vorm van een rondboog met schelpmotief. Boven de risalieten dakkapelletjes met vleugelstukken en een frontonbekroning.Tegen het risaliet van de rechter zijgevel (W) een erker over twee bouwlagen met afsluitende geprofileerde kroonlijst. De halfronde gemetselde erker op de begane grond is voorzien van T-vensters. In de zevenhoekige houten erker op de verdieping afwisselend brede en smalle vensters met bovenlicht. De dakkapel boven het risaliet heeft een getoogd venster in een rijk versierde aedicula. In de linker zijgevel (O) een samengesteld traplicht onder rondboog. De dienstingang in het risaliet aan deze gevel geeft toegang tot het achterste gedeelte van het huis waarvan de gevels minder rijk zijn gedecoreerd.
De vensters in de grote houten serre aan de achterzijde (Z) hebben halfronde bovenlichten met glas-in-lood en bovenop een balkonbalustrade. Monumental detached MANSION dating from circa 1890 in an eclectic architectural style with neo-renaissance detailing based on French examples. Description Large building of two storeys on a complex ground plan under an abated hipped roof with slates in Maas covering. The facades are raised above a high sandstone plinth in brown brick and articulated with white plastered speckled courses and profiled natural stone string courses. The surrounding plastered frieze is decorated above the window axes of the front and right side facades (N and W) with cassettes and festoons between profiled consoles. The roof dormer above the risalite has an arched window in richly decorated aedicula. In the left side facade (O) a complex stairlight under a round arch. The service entrance in the risalite at this facade provides access to the rear part of the house whose facades are less richly decorated.
The windows in the large wooden conservatory at the rear (S) have semicircular fanlights with leaded glass and above a balcony balustrade.
