Inleiding
De betonnen functionalistische WATERTOREN is in 1926, in opdracht van de Algemene Waterleiding Maatschappij Almelo, gebouwd naar een ontwerp van de architect G. Halbertsma en de ingenieur J. Buining. Aannemer B. Stegehuis en Zoon voerde het werk uit. De toren is een kopie van een inmiddels afgebroken watertoren die in 1916 in Velsen (NH) is gebouwd. De watertoren is 38,1 meter hoog en heeft een betonnen reservoir met een inhoud van 750 kubieke meter. De vensteropeningen in de schacht zijn tijdens een restauratie in 1973 dicht gezet. Enkele jaren later is de blauw en grijze beschildering aangebracht om de vertikale geleding van de watertoren te benadrukken. De watertoren staat aan de Reggestraat midden in een woonwijk. Omschrijving Vanuit een vierkante plattegrond opgetrokken watertoren van gewapend beton met een hoge sokkel en taps toelopende schacht. De uitkragende bovenbouw van het reservoir wordt gedekt door een tentdak met leien.Een hardstenen trap van vijf treden leidt naar de dubbele opgeklampte deur in de sokkel van de voorgevel (O) aan de straat. Blauw geschilderde lijnen volgen de contouren van de rechthoekige spaarvelden tussen de lisenen van de schacht. De lisenen eindigen in betonnen kraagstukken onder de uitkragende bovenbouw met aan elke kant een driezijdig middenrisaliet. Het hoog opgaande risaliet van de voorgevel wordt gedekt door een schilddakje.
De vensterassen in de risalieten en in de gevelvlakken aan weerszijden zijn geaccentueerd door blauwe geschilderde vertikale lijnen. De smalle vierruits vensters hebben stalen kozijnen. Inwendig rust het betonnen reservoir op een betonskelet met in de schacht een betonnen trap over drie bouwlagen. Description
Water tower of reinforced concrete raised from a square ground plan with a high base and tapering shaft. The projecting upper structure of the reservoir is covered by a tent roof with slate. A stone staircase of five steps leads to the double riveted door in the base of the front facade (E) facing the street. Blue painted lines follow the contours of the rectangular recess fields between the lisenes of the shaft. The lisenes end in concrete corbels under the projecting upper structure with a three-sided central risalit on each side. The tall rising risalit of the front facade is covered by a small hipped roof.
The window axes in the risalits and in the facade planes on either side are accentuated by blue painted vertical lines. The narrow four-paned windows have steel frames.
Internally the concrete reservoir rests on a concrete skeleton with a concrete staircase in the shaft over three storeys. Above this two steel spiral staircases run along the reservoir to the attic under the timber truss.
