Inleiding
Omschrijving
Rueter
- de gaafheid van in- en exterieur
- de zeldzaamheid in Twente

Description
Introduction
COUNTRY HOUSE designed by Blaricom architect Th. Rueter on commission of textile manufacturer A. Bendien and completed in 1917. Typical of the architect's oeuvre is the combination of Amsterdam School architectural style with the thatched roof in which he incorporated various roof shapes, including the Indonesian Minang Kabau roof. For the driveway of the house a wooden entrance gate between brick pillars has been placed in Amsterdam School style. The dwelling house, designed as a country house, now stands in the city. The loggia in the front elevation (South) was closed with windows in keeping with the style in 1923. The kitchen has been rebuilt, which has also left traces in the rear elevation (North). The wood in the interior is painted white.
Description
The country house is constructed in yellow brick over one storey on a composite ground plan under a composite thatched roof structure. In the roof dormer gables under vaults are placed and at the rear a high and a low chimney. The elevations are provided with decorative brick bonds. The doors are placed in diagonal-arched window frames, the windows are square-topped under lintels, partly provided with fanlights and stained glass and hung with white shutters with a blue hourglass and a black edge. The steps around the house are constructed on a diagonal-arched ground plan. The left section of the front elevation (South) is constructed under a mansard roof, which projects slightly as a Minang Kabau roof.
The original loggia to its right is situated under a vault in the roof face.
The left section of the left side elevation (West) projects under a large overhanging half-hipped roof. To the right in the projection is a profiled wooden entrance door placed in a portico consisting of a brick wall with a column, on which a wooden hood with diagonal-arched overhang. The portico is enclosed with glass. To the left in the projection is also a door placed under a hood.
In the rear elevation (North) are on the left two shaped rafters related to Minang-Kabau and on the right a small extension under a gabled roof. Under the left shaped rafter the three-sided facade section projects. In the middle of the projection is a double door placed under a glazed hood on wooden columns. Under the second shaped rafter the elevation on the ground floor has been altered as a result of the enlarged kitchen.
In the right side elevation (East) under a large overhanging half-hipped roof a triangular bay has been placed with a balcony on top.
In the house the diagonal arch appears in the oak wainscotting, the door posts, the doors and the built-in cupboards. In the house are further preserved, among other things, the tile floors, the marble fireplace and the stained glass.
Significance
The country house is of cultural and architectural-historical importance because of:
- the original function as dwelling house of textile manufacturer Bendien
- the exceptional combination of Amsterdam School architectural style with the Indonesian Minang Kabau roof
- the design that is characteristic of the oeuvre of architect Th. Rueter
- the integrity of interior and exterior
- the rarity in Twente
