Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 69:

Description
Description of component 69:
WATER TOWER in Neo-Renaissance style, belonging to the Twickel estate. Designed in 1894 on the instructions of Dr. R.F. Baron van Heeckeren by H.P.N. Halbertsma. Built by the contractors Scholten & Westenberg from Almelo and provided with sculpture by Gerard Muller. Other companies that worked on the tower are: F.A. Neuman from Aachen (Kesselsmiede), Atelier for stained glass "'t Prinsenhof", J.L. Schouten Civil Engineer & Architect and J.T. van Vuuren from Amsterdam (Art and Heavy Metalwork), who turned the balusters.
The tower was originally intended as a reservoir for fire extinguishing on Twickel. Upon commissioning, together with water piping, it was intended for use by the municipality of Delden. When it became apparent that the water at Twickel contained salt and was therefore not usable as drinking water, the tower was connected to the water supply network of Almelo. In the tower an early example of an iron Intze reservoir was placed with a capacity of 200 m3.
Originally a boiler house was placed against the north side of the tower.
Description
A 37.5 metre high water tower built in red brick on a hard stone base. Above a round substructure, in which a richly worked entrance on the south side provides access to the exceptionally luxuriously finished interior, an octagonal reservoir casing projects outward.
The tower is divided in the classical manner into three parts: above a heavy cordon moulding, which defines the classical basement, the building structure of the tower tapers; this slenderer round section forms the shaft; the octagonal reservoir casing finally takes the place of the main structure. On the reservoir casing stands a small octagonal struck cupola with six-pane windows and crenellations, into which the staircase emerges and from which one has access to the roof of the tower. The cupola is not visible from below.
For the framing of the entrance and the window frames, the sills, the lintels of the peepholes, the corner blocks, the capitals, the consoles, the horizontal mouldings, the arch frieze and other decorative elements use was made of Escausijn stone, Petit granit de l'Ourthe, Oberkirch sandstone and Gildehouse sandstone.
In the substructure all emphasis is placed on the design of the entrance (S). This consists of a double panel door with a round-arched fanlight, set in a surround of Ionic columns with a cornice above which a semicircular broken pediment with a coat of arms beneath a small tympanum. The round substructure is further articulated by two cordon mouldings, two round-arched windows on the ground floor and peepholes which mark the course of the staircase and the location of the storeys.
The reservoir casing is more richly decorated than the substructure. Four winged putti (with the facial features of the two nephews of the Baron van Heeckeren van Wassenaer, the son of engineer Halbertsma and the son of steward Bitter), two river gods and two water nymphs mark the transition from the round to the octagonal, projecting upper structure. A round-arched frieze with a thickening at the corners supports the facade panels of the reservoir casing, in which on each side a blind window with tympanum is placed. Horizontal profile mouldings, knobs and a small round-arched frieze provide further articulation of the upper structure, which ends in crenellations.
The interior of the water tower is richly decorated. On the ground floor the decoration consists among other things of a partial mosaic floor, decorated steel floor plates and a dado consisting of dark and light blue worked tiles. In this room stand two pumps and there is a hatch flanked by two railings, which provides access to the soft water cellar. A hard stone staircase, partially supported on consoles, leads to three intermediate floors and an iron spiral staircase through the middle of the reservoir to the top of the tower. The stair rail consists of cast-iron twisted balusters, fastened at the bottom with rosettes, and a wooden beam. The reservoir is constructed of iron plates riveted together. The walls and the reservoir are painted light green. The little cupola on the water tower is completely lined with wood on the inside.
On the floors hang the plaster casts of the putti, river gods and water nymphs and other sandstone decorations of the exterior.
Valuation
The water tower of Twickel is of cultural/architectural-historical and urban planning importance:
- because of its function as a water tower for the estate and the municipality, given by the baron of Twickel
- as a very richly detailed specimen of a water tower in Neo-Renaissance style
- because of its visually defining location in the landscape and in relation to the neighbouring (Twickel) buildings
- because of the intactness of the interior and exterior
- because of the rarity of the aforementioned characteristics
