Inleiding

Introduction

Originally built as a villa (1899) in neo-Renaissance style to the design of H. Witzand (Meppel). In the portal a foundation stone: The First stone laid by Hendrikje Karsten on 3rd November 1899. Around 1920 the property was enlarged at the rear whereby in the extension of the coach house a farmhouse barn was built in matching style. From that moment the property was in use as a farmstead and therefore typologically belongs to the category of gentlemen's farm. The representative residential part is reinforced by the creation of a spacious garden with some substantial trees (including a beech) and an asymmetrically laid out driveway with brick paving. Garden and courtyard paving are of importance but do not require separate protection. The post-war extension at the rear and on the western side as well as the added ancillary barn fall outside the protection.

Description

The residence is constructed in brick and is covered by a steeply pitched and flattened hipped roof with slate covering, chimneys with flat caps and several built-out roof dormer windows. Facade construction with ashlar plinth, masonry construction, ashlar drip moulding and courses and a cornice with worked consoles and dentil moulding. Front facade with centrally a portal introduced by a plastered surround with ornamental pieces. Portal with ashlar step, sides with glazed tiling and foundation stone (text above) by Ant. N. Bouvy (Amsterdam); door with carved work and ornamental grilles with leaded glass, alternating lintel with carved work and fanlight. On either side of the entrance a wide window with a plastered surround, ashlar sill with below a casement, at the top a lintel and a yellow stone corbel with springer and closing stones; carved window frame wood, profiled sub-sill. Built-up roof dormer with springing block-faced plaster at the corners, courses and round-arched window with opening double doors and round-arched fanlight with three panes; springer and closing stones. Projecting roof edge with ornamental pieces and corner and coping pieces. The dormer is crowned with a steeply pitched French-Renaissance roof with slate covering crowned with roof edge and wrought-iron ornamental railing and pinnacles (right a weathervane). The left facade corner projects slightly and is chamfered. Window built-up similarly to the others. Above the cornice a roof dormer with inward and outward swept claw pieces, pilasters, cornice and pediment and fitted with tent roof with pinnacle. The roof dormer is fitted with double-opening window with bar. The right corner is constructed more as an oriel and likewise placed diagonally. On three sides fitted with narrow windows (similar arrangement to the others). Above the cornice a built-up roof dormer with windows on three sides under a curved lintel and at the top a profiled roof edge. The roof dormer is covered by a tent roof with slate and pinnacle. The side facades have a plastered plinth and masonry construction with courses in yellow stone, right-angled windows with ashlar sill and relieving arches with masonry springer and closing stones (yellow stone). Right side facade among others high-placed WC window and two cellar windows. East facade has among others a panel door with ornamental grille and fanlight. In the plane of this facade is the transition to the barn via a passage door with slightly curved 8-pane fanlight and a slightly curved clamped board door with at the top a strip of panes. The eastern side facade has a high construction and is articulated by spacious stable windows and right-angled passage doors. A building joint marks the transition to the extension of c. 1920. In the rear section two double hayloft hatches with 9-pane windows. The rear facade is a truncated gable with slightly projecting masonry in the central axis. Of the western side only the section with the flat extension is relevant as an added element. Characteristic thereof is a coupled T-window with leaded glass fanlight as well as a panel door with fanlight.

INTERIOR. The residence has a central corridor and hall. Hall: floor, thresholds, bases in white marble. Wainscoting with glazed tiles and profile tiles. Side walls with stuccoed profile mouldings and high reliefs with hunting scenes. Weather vestibule with side and top lights fitted with leaded glass; door with frosted glass. In the corridor marble is likewise applied, also for the wainscoting. In the corridor four panel doors are placed with a rich neo-Renaissance surround, the remaining doors have a more sober surround. The transition to the second section of the corridor which runs transversely to the first is marked by a round arch sprung with pilasters in which a roller blind is incorporated. In this section a wooden staircase with balustrade and a richly decorated newel post with lamp-bearing figurine. Opening onto this corridor several doors with surround including the toilet door (vestibule with behind it toilet fitted with glazed wainscoting). The intermediate room, the front room and the display room are richly decorated with among other things black marble fireplaces and overmantels with ornaments, the ceilings are richly decorated with stuccowork. The windows, doors and cupboards (including the sliding doors between front and rear room) are in the original colour scheme (front room features the colours yellow, moss green and light green, the display room is executed in an old-red tone). The crystal chandeliers are also still present.

Justification

The property, originally built as a villa, is of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning significance due to the development and importance of Haakswold, due to the farmstead type as well as due to the design, use of materials and the location in the valuable townscape. The particularly high integrity of the exterior and interior of the residence give this property additional added value.
