Inleiding
In Functionalisme omstreeks 1914 naar een ontwerp van architect ir. Ch. H. J. Driessen gebouwd BETONVIADUCT. Het betonviaduct vormt een van de kunstwerken over de spoorlijn Heerlen-Valkenburg in het zuid-oostelijk deel van Limburg. Het betonviaduct is ongeveer halverwege de kernen Valkenburg en Schin op Geul gesitueerd en is enkel bestemd voor voetgangers en fietsers.
Omschrijving
Het betonviaduct nabij de Molenweg is van het type "boogbrug met hooggelegen rijdek". Het bezit een overspanning met een lengte van ongeveer 20 meter en een rijdekbreedte van ongeveer 4,20 meter. Deze overspanning heeft de vorm van een staande korfboog met hierop een betonnen rijvloer bekleedt met baksteen. Het betonviaduct bezit enkel een midden-overspanning. De midden-overspanning wordt ondersteund door twee massieve betonfunderingen die hoger in het talud van de ingraving zijn aangebracht.
Waardering
Het betonviaduct bezit cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van een technische en typologische ontwikkeling, en op grond van de innovatieve waarde: een overspanning, met zgn. staande korfboog, die bij dit viaduct werden toegepast betreft een techniek die vrijwel zeker nooit eerder of later in Nederland is voorgekomen. Architectuurhistorische waarden ontleent het betonviaduct aan het bijzonder belang van het object voor de bovenregionale geschiedenis van de architectuur en de bouwtechniek, als voorbeeld van het oeuvre van architect ir. Ch. H. J. Driessen en wegens het gebruik van beton als bouwmateriaal. Ensemblewaarden bezit de spoorbrug als essentieel onderdeel van het spoorlijntraject Valkenburg-Voerendaal-Heerlen in het glooiende landschap van oostelijk Zuid-Limburg met diverse stationsgebouwen en kunstwerken en als geheel van bijzondere cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde. Het betonviaduct is tevens van bijzondere betekenis wegens de situering en daarmee verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de streek. Het betonviaduct is tenslotte van belang wegens de architectonische gaafheid van het object en in relatie tot de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de landschappelijke omgeving, en de architectuurhistorische m.n. betonhistorisch, bouwtechnische, typologische en functionele zeldzaamheid.
