Inleiding
Met elementen van Neo Romaans omstreeks 1883 in opdracht van de familie Palmen gebouwde GRAFKELDER.
De kelder vormt een van vier grafkelders op het kerkhof tegen de helling van de Couberg in Valkenburg aan de Geul.
Omschrijving:
Symmetrische indeling frontgevel. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is mergel. Rondboogvormige gietijzeren deur in rondboogvormige omlijsting, geflankeerd door kleine boogvormige nissen. Aan bovenzijde deur plaquette met de tekst "Familie Begraafplaats van Notaris J.L. Palmen".
Aan weerszijden van plaquette lauwerkransen in mergel. Frontgevel uitlopend in een horizontale afsluiting met boogfriesdecoratie en bekroond met een hardstenen kruis. In de frontgevel pilasters en hardstenen ornamenten.
Van het INTERIEUR zijn onder meer van belang: plafond met kruisribgewelven in baksteen; kelder afgedekt met houten luik met hierin grafnissen afgedekt met grafstenen.
Waardering:
De grafkelder van de familie Palmen is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke en typologische ontwikkeling. De grafkelder bezit architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege het belang voor de bovenregionale geschiedenis van de architectuur, de toepassing van mergel als bouwmateriaal en de ornamentiek. Ensemblewaarde ontleent de grafkelder aan de situering in de gravenwand op het het kerkhof tegen de helling van de Couberg en daarmee van betekenis voor het aanzien van dit deel van Valkenburg aan de Geul.
