Inleiding
De Theo Thijssenschool is van oorsprong - en nog steeds - een Openbare Lagere School (basisschool). Het gebouw, dat werd gebouwd in 1927 naar ontwerp van R. Strak, gemeentearchitect te Harlingen, ligt in het noordoosten van de stad en is naar het zuidoosten georiënteerd. De school staat op een ruim terrein, dat recent opnieuw is ingericht en dat omsloten wordt door: aan de noordzijde de Algemene Begraafplaats, aan de oostzijde de Midlumerlaan en aan de westzijde het perceel dat bij Midlumerlaan 11 hoort. Het muurtje dat het terrein begrensde is niet meer geheel compleet; het ijzeren toegangshek aan de voorzijde is nog wel aanwezig. De school is gebouwd in een kubistisch-expressionistische variant van de Amsterdamse School. Net als in andere (zeldzame) gebouwen in Friesland, die in de stijl van de Amsterdamse School zijn gebouwd, is ook in de bijna kubistisch-expressionistische bouwvormen van dit gebouw de invloed van het werk van architect Dudok te herkennen. Dudok was in die tijd - van 1915 tot 1927 - directeur van Publieke Werken te Hilversum. In Friesland zijn de voorbeelden van deze meer expressionistische variant op de Amsterdamse School-architectuur zeldzaam en, voor zover aanwezig, met name in de grotere steden aan te treffen. De school is in 1957 aan de noordoost-zijde uitgebreid en vervolgens aan de westzijde. In 1980 is de school verbouwd en gerenoveerd door architect Auke de Vries. Bij deze gelegenheid is het interieur volledig verbouwd. De uitbreidingen komen niet in aanmerking voor de bescherming van rijkswege, evenmin als het schoolplein, de aanbouw tegen de noordwestelijke gevel en het interieur. Het restant van het muurtje en het toegangshek zijn voor de bescherming van ondergeschikt belang.
Omschrijving
Het schoolgebouw heeft een plattegrond die als het ware is samengesteld uit drie volumes: een rechthoekig deel aan de zuidwestzijde, een trapezodale vorm aan de zuidzijde en een vierkant deel tussen deze twee in. Het rechthoekige deel is twee bouwlagen hoog; het trapeziumvormige deel is één bouwlaag hoog. Op het vierkante deel is een torenachtige gedeelte ge-construeerd waarin zich het trappenhuis en de hal bevinden. In het trapeziumvormige deel bevond zich de kamer van het hoofd van de school en in het lange, rechthoekige deel de vier vierkante leslokalen, de toiletten en de garderobe. Het gebouw wordt gedekt door platte daken en is in donkerbruine, gekamde bakstenen opgetrokken. De zuidoostelijke gevel van het rechthoekige gedeelte is van twee tweedelige stroken vensters voorzien. De stroken omvatten boven een rij vensters die een doorlopende rij vormen en voorzien zijn van houten kozijnen en houten, vijfdelige roedeverdelingen. Aan de onderkant zitten vier maal drie aan drie gekoppelde enkelruitsvensters. In de noordwestelijke gevel bevindt zich een rij enkelruitsvensters in de tweede bouwlaag. Tegen een deel van de eerste bouwlaag is in 1980 een aanbouw geplaatst. Aan beide gevels drie hemelwaterafvoeren. De noordoostelijke gevel grenst aan de uitbreiding. De zuidwestelijke gevel is voor een deel blind en voor een deel grenst deze aan het torengedeelte. Hierin bevindt zich de hoofdingang, die door een platte betonnen luifel wordt gedekt. Vier treden leiden naar de houten vierdelige ingangsdeur. In de gevel van het torengedeelte, boven de ingang, zitten twee smalle vensters met uitstekende natuurstenen afsluiting. In de zuidwestgevel van dit gedeelte bevindt zich bijna over het gehele geveloppervlak een rechthoekig 32-ruitsvenster met smal afdak. Hierboven zitten drie kleine vierkante vensters. Aan de noordwestzijde van de toren bevindt zich een tweede brede ingang, waarin rechts een vierdelige deur is geplaatst; links ervan is een langgerekt, horizontaal venster aangebracht. Het trapezoïdale deel van het gebouw is in de zuidoostelijke en noordwestelijke gevels voorzien van een strook bestaande uit drie aaneengesloten vensters met tussenlichten. In de zuidwestgevel links en rechts in de pilaarvormige hoeken twee kleine rechthoekige vensters.
Waardering
De Theo Thijssenschool uit 1927 te Harlingen, gebouwd in een kubistisch-expressionistische variant van de Amsterdamse School door R. Strak, is van bijzondere cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch belang:

The Theo Thijssenschool is originally - and still is - a Public Primary School (elementary school). The building, which was constructed in 1927 according to a design by R. Strak, municipal architect in Harlingen, is located in the northeast of the city and is oriented towards the southeast. The school stands on an extensive site, which has recently been renovated and which is bordered by: on the north side the General Cemetery, on the east side the Midlumerlaan and on the west side the plot that belongs to Midlumerlaan 11. The wall that bordered the site is no longer completely intact; the iron entrance gate at the front is still present. The school is built in a cubist-expressionist variant of the Amsterdam School. Just as in other (rare) buildings in Friesland, which have been built in the style of the Amsterdam School, the influence of architect Dudok's work can also be recognized in the almost cubist-expressionist building forms of this building. Dudok was at that time - from 1915 to 1927 - director of Public Works in Hilversum. Description
The school building has a floorplan which is as it were composed of three volumes: a rectangular section on the southwest side, a trapezoidal form on the south side and a square section between these two. The rectangular section is two storeys high; the trapezoidal section is one storey high. On the square section a tower-like section has been constructed which contains the stairwell and the hall. In the trapezoidal section was located the office of the school principal and in the long, rectangular section the four square classrooms, the toilets and the cloakroom. The building is covered by flat roofs and is constructed in dark brown, combed brickwork. The southeastern facade of the rectangular section is provided with two two-part strips of windows. The strips comprise above a row of windows which form a continuous row and are equipped with wooden frames and wooden, five-part glazing bars. At the bottom are four times three by three coupled single-pane windows. In the northwestern facade is a row of single-pane windows in the second storey. Against part of the first storey an annex was placed in 1980. On both facades three rainwater gutters. The northeastern facade borders the extension. The southwestern facade is partly blind and partly borders the tower section. The main entrance is located in it, which is covered by a flat concrete canopy. Four steps lead to the wooden four-part entrance door. In the facade of the tower section, above the entrance, are two narrow windows with projecting natural stone surround. In the southwest facade of this section, almost over the entire facade surface, is a rectangular 32-pane window with narrow canopy. Above this are three small square windows. On the northwest side of the tower is a second wide entrance, in which a four-part door is placed on the right; to the left of it is an elongated, horizontal window. The trapezoidal section of the building is provided in the southeastern and northwestern facades with a strip consisting of three connected windows with intermediate lights. In the southwest facade on the left and right in the pillar-shaped corners two small rectangular windows.
