Inleiding
Het REINIGINGSHUIS (ook metaarhuis) hoort bij de Joodse Begraafplaats, die in 1868 binnen de Algemene Begraafplaats van de stad Harlingen is aangelegd. Het reinigingshuis is een blokvormig gebouw, naar het zuiden georiënteerd en gelegen aan de oostzijde van de omheinde Joodse Begraafplaats. Het is in 1909 gebouwd, toen de Joodse Begraafplaats werd uitgebreid, in een stijl waarvan de bouw- en decoratieve elementen zijn ontleend aan de Art Nouveau. In de bekroning van de voorgevel is in het Hebreeuws en volgens de Joodse jaartelling een opschrift gebeiteld met het stichtingsjaar 5669.
Omschrijving
Het reinigingshuis heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond en één bouwlaag. Het platte dak wordt aan de noord- en zuidzijde afgesloten door een smalle houten daklijst op houten klosjes. Het is in bruine bakstenen opgetrokken; voor de driesteens hoge banden op de zijgevels, tussen de vensters, zijn gele bakstenen gebruikt. Ook de plint met halfronde afsluiting is gemetseld. De vier gemetselde hoekpilasters met ellipsboog-vormige bekroning zijn aan de bovenkant van twee decoratieve gele gemetselde banden voorzien. In de voorgevel de houten ingangsdeur en drie ronde vensters met roedeverdeling in de vorm van een Davidster. Naast de deur zijn - twee aan twee - vier smalle verticale venstertjes met afgeronde lekdorpels geplaatst. Hierboven en boven de ingangsdeur zit een latei. De gevel wordt afgesloten door een gemetseld tandfries met licht gebogen timpaam-achtige bekroning. In de achtergevel een dubbele houten deur met erboven een rond venster met Davidster-roedeverdeling; aan de rechterzijde ervan is een enkele houten deur. De deuren zijn van lateien voorzien. Een gemetseld tandfries sluit de achtergevel af. In de zijgevels drie halfronde vensters met ijzeren roedeverdeling, aanzet- en sluistenen in de halfronde boog en afgeronde lekdorpels.

The PURIFICATION HOUSE (also known as metarah house) belongs to the Jewish Cemetery, which was established in 1868 within the General Cemetery of the city of Harlingen. The purification house is a blocky building, oriented towards the south and located on the east side of the enclosed Jewish Cemetery. It was built in 1909, when the Jewish Cemetery was expanded, in a style of which the structural and decorative elements are derived from Art Nouveau. Description
The purification house has a rectangular floor plan and one storey. The flat roof is closed on the north and south sides by a narrow wooden cornice on wooden blocks. It is built in brown bricks; for the three-brick-wide bands on the side facades, between the windows, yellow bricks are used. The plinth with semi-circular finish is also mortared. The four mortared corner pilasters with ellipse-shaped crests are provided at the top with two decorative yellow mortared bands. In the front facade the wooden entrance door and three round windows with glazing bars in the form of a Star of David. Next to the door - two by two - four narrow vertical small windows with rounded drip mouldings are placed. Above this and above the entrance door is a lintel. The facade is closed off by a mortared tooth frieze with slightly curved tympanum-like crest. In the rear facade a double wooden door with above it a round window with Star of David glazing bars; to the right of it is a single wooden door. The doors are provided with lintels. A mortared tooth frieze closes off the rear facade. In the side facades three semi-circular windows with iron glazing bars, springing stones and springer stones in the semi-circular arch and rounded drip mouldings.
