Inleiding
ALGEMEEN GEDEELTE met TOEGANGSHEK van de Algemene Begraafplaats te Harlingen. Gietijzeren hekwerk dat zeer waarschijnlijk rond 1865 is vervaardigd, tijdens de aanleg van de begraafplaats. Het is op stilistische gronden toe te schrijven aan Benedictus Mohrmann, die een ijzergieterij in Leeuwarden had. Zijn hand is herkenbaar aan de detaillering van enkele onderdelen. Het hek staat op de gemetselde overkluizing over de omgrachting, in het midden van de oorspronkelijke zuidzijde van de begraafplaats.
Omschrijving
Het oude terrein van de begraafplaats omvat acht perken, die vanaf de ingang gezien twee aan twee in westelijke richting in vier rijen worden gerangschikt door een regelmatig padenbeloop. GENERAL SECTION with ENTRANCE GATE of the General Cemetery of Harlingen. Cast-iron gates almost certainly manufactured around 1865, during the construction of the cemetery. On stylistic grounds it is attributable to Benedictus Mohrmann, who had an iron foundry in Leeuwarden. His hand is recognisable in the detailing of several components. The gate stands on the brick vaulting over the moat, in the centre of the original south side of the cemetery.
Description
The old cemetery grounds comprise eight plots, which from the entrance viewed are arranged two by two in a westerly direction in four rows by a regular path layout. The path layout consists of one longitudinal main axis (from the entrance to the rear), three transversal paths perpendicular to this axis and a continuous path around the grounds.
The entrance gate consists of two tall cast-iron pillars with a lower wing on either side and in the middle two wide hinged wings. The tall pillars consist of narrow vertically placed rectangular shafts with iron coping. The shafts are provided with simple decorative iron rods and circles and with the usual death symbols, such as inverted torches, tail-biting snakes, hourglasses and butterflies. The tall spikes with spear points are alternated at the bottom with low spikes with curled ends, between which a snail-shaped thickening is placed.
