Inleiding
Omschrijving
Het hoofdgebouw bestaat uit vier "hoofd-bouwvolumes", die op een langwerpige plattegrond zijn geprojecteerd. Van voren naar achteren bevinden zich: - een overdekkende overbrugging op pilaren onder schilddak die, over het water, de straat verbindt met de ingangspartij in het tweede bouwvolume;
- een tweede bouwvolume van twee bouwlagen, onder schilddak, die aan de noordzijde tegen een torenachtig derde bouwvolume onder tentdak is geplaatst;

Description
Introduction
The main building of the former State Secondary Grammar School "Simon Vestdijk" in Harlingen is part of the school complex built in 1926 to the design of architect Joseph Crouwel jr. (1885-1962) from Amsterdam. Crouwel entered the service of the State as an architect in 1917. In 1920 he was deputy state architect at the Public Buildings Service, First District. In 1923 the service merged with the newly formed State Buildings Service. From 1947 he was chief architect of this service. He built in the style of the Amsterdam School. In the design for the State H.B.S. the influence that the work of architect Dudok had on his work is also visible. The Expressionist forms of the Amsterdam School are combined with relatively austere, almost cubist building forms. The monumentality of his design also recalls the relatively massive building method of his masters, Berlage and De Bazels. Much attention was given to finishing and detailing, also in the interior.
Description
The main building consists of four "main building volumes", which are arranged on an elongated floor plan. From front to back: - a covered bridge on pillars under a hipped roof which, over the water, connects the street with the entrance section in the second building volume;
- a second building volume of two storeys, under a hipped roof, which is placed on the north side against a tower-like third building volume under a tent roof;
- on the north side of this tower-like section is the elongated fourth building component which extends to the Krugerstraat. The complex roof - with two chimneys, one on the ridge junction of the northern pitch and one on the tower section - is covered with red unglazed Dutch tiles and is provided on the east and west sides of the large roof slopes with four two-light roof dormers. The main building is constructed in yellow brickwork. Behind the bridge on four brick piers, the main entrance is placed in the lower building volume of two storeys. On either side of the bridge a brick wall has been built. At the level of the first piers a four-part iron gate is placed. The gate consists of four hinged plates, on which a toothed moulding is placed. The entrance section is formed by the brick walls which slope inwards, with the wide wooden door between them. The door is decorated with a multi-part wooden glazing bar arrangement. The floor of the bridge is tiled in a square pattern. Against the south facade of the lower building block, two three-quarter round decorative brick building forms are placed at the corners. On the first floor on either side of the roof slopes of the bridge are two wooden rectangular bay windows on corbels. In the east and west facade in the first storey three small four-light windows and in the second storey a large window section. This consists of three eight-light windows with two-light fanlights. The tall tower-like building volume is provided with a brick "medieval" projecting balconette with wooden balcony door. Above the balconette, just below the hipped roof, a small square window. In the east and west facade three projecting brick profiles with stone dowels between which windows are placed. Against the rear facade of the tower is placed the front facade of the northern building block. The east and west facades of this elongated building component, where the classrooms are located, are provided with large wooden window sections: in the first storey five multi-light window sections, in the second storey a long horizontal window section - across the whole facade - with eight-light glazing bars. In the rear facade is an entrance. This is enclosed by a brick wall and covered by a concrete canopy. Above this entrance is a large window section with leaded glass, behind which a staircase has recently been placed. The window section extends across the two storeys and is formed by a total of twelve vertical windows in two rows. The leaded glass windows were designed by Pieter A. Hofman (1885-1965). They are not dated, but are signed with: DESIGN P.A. HOFMAN DEN. HAAG. EXECUTED BY WORKSHOP "NIEUWE HONSEL" DEN. HAAG. The technique used is grisaille on coloured glass. The depicted subjects consist partly of figures from Greek mythology - the heroes Odysseus and Nostos and Greek texts - and partly of images with the theme "L'Inferno", the first book of the "Divina Commedia" by Dante Alighieri. Depicted are - with captions -: "the dark cloud", "the nonentities", "Charon the ferryman", "the centaurs", "the blasphemers", "the corruptible", "the thieves", "the hypocrites" and "Dante and Beatrice". In the short wing under a gabled roof, which is placed to the west of and perpendicular to this elongated building component, are ten- and eight-light windows and a rear entrance. East of the northern building block is a side wing under a gabled roof built - in which new window frames have been placed - which led to the old rectangular gymnasium. In front of this is the square changing room. The gymnasium and changing space are covered by hipped roofs with red unglazed Dutch tiles.
The INTERIOR is original with regard to the layout. Throughout, among other things, the original glazed yellow tilework is present, as well as the original tile floor (blue with three white stripes along the length) and the wooden doors. The wooden five-light draught door in the hall is provided on both sides with eight-light sidelights. In the hall on the left and right are two hardstone staircases with walls of glazed brickwork which lead to the first floor. The brick wainscoting follows the line of the stairs step-by-step to the upper floor. Brick wainscoting is also present in the corridors. In the classrooms the ceilings are lowered throughout. The wooden doors are still original, as are the coat racks which are placed against the wainscoting on the west side. The old headmaster's room, which is located in the small building block to the east of the tower, is still reasonably original in its fittings: here, among other things, the old wooden wall cabinets are present. The staff room on the first floor of the southern lower building block is located above the main entrance. The wooden original wall furniture (cabinets and bookcases) is still present. Here also stands furniture which comes from other rooms of the school. The second floor is still original in layout. The attic space with collar-tie truss is original.
