Inleiding
Het GRAFMONUMENT voor H.W. Brouwer (1874-1916) bevindt zich vanaf de ingang gezien op het rechter perk van de derde rij perken van de Algemene Begraafplaats te Harlingen, aangelegd rond 1865. Het grafmonument is in 1916 vervaardigd - het jaar van overlijden van H.W. Brouwer - naar ontwerp van keramist W.C. Brouwer (1877-1933). Het opschrift luidt: H.W. Brouwer, Liefde Plichtbesef Zelfverzaking 3 maart 1874 - 22 november 1916. Aan de achterkant van het monument zijn de letters R.I.V. (RUST IN VREDE) ingebeiteld.
Omschrijving
Het grafmonument is aedicula-vormig en opgebouwd uit keramische elementen. De versieringen zijn kenmerkend voor het werk van W.C. Brouwer. Aan de voorzijde is in een nis een asurn geplaatst, symbool voor vergankelijkheid en dood. Op de twee treden ervoor zijn van boven naar beneden respectievelijk de geboorte- en de overlijdensdatum ingebeiteld. Op het aan weerszijden uitstekend basement hiervoor staan twee kleinere vazen. De licht gebogen, frontonvormige en getrapte bekroning (waarin Art Nouveau-motieven zijn verwerkt) heeft een segmentbogige afsluiting en wordt verfraaid door een halfronde boog met versiering waarin het opschrift LIEFDE PLICHTBESEF ZELFVERZAKING is verwerkt. Boven het opschrift is de naam van de begravene ingebeiteld. De halfronde boog steunt op pilasterachtige, trapsgewijs terugspringende stijlen. Op de achterzijde zijn boven in de bekroning de letters RIV (Rust In Vrede) ingebeiteld. Het eigenlijke graf wordt begrensd door twee liggende stenen.

Description
The grave monument is aedicula-shaped and built up from ceramic elements. The decorations are characteristic of W.C. Brouwer's work. On the front face, an urn is placed in a niche, symbolising transience and death. On the two steps in front of it, the date of birth and the date of death are chiselled from top to bottom respectively. On the basement projecting on both sides in front stand two smaller vases. The slightly curved, frontispice-shaped and stepped cresting (in which Art Nouveau motifs are incorporated) has a segmental arch closure and is embellished by a semicircular arch with ornamentation in which the inscription LOVE SENSE OF DUTY SELF-DENIAL is worked. Above the inscription is the name of the deceased chiselled. The semicircular arch is supported by pilaster-like, step-wise receding stiles. On the back above in the cresting the letters RIV (Rest In Vrede) are chiselled. The actual grave is bounded by two recumbent stones.
