Inleiding
Het blokje ARBEIDERSWONINGEN aan de Nieuweweg 2 en 4 is in 1910 gebouwd naar ontwerp van architect L. Torenbeek; aannemer was R. Krijtenburg uit Harlingen. De woningen horen bij het sociale woningbouwcomplex van het Havengebied, dat gerealiseerd werd in de periode 1909-1911 in opdracht van de Bouwvereniging Harlingen. De woningen zijn in Ambachtelijk-traditionele stijl gebouwd. Deze twee-onder-één-kap woningen zijn van het type A (zie de bijbehorende complexbeschrijving). Het blok is naar het noord-oosten georiënteerd en heeft geen vóór- of achtertuin.
Omschrijving
De twee-onder-één-kap woningen aan de Nieuweweg 2 en 4 zijn de enige twee woningen binnen het complex die tot het type A horen. Het blok heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond en is één bouwlaag hoog, met zolderverdieping.De gevel aan de straatzijde wordt door een middenrisaliet in tweeën gedeeld. Het blok wordt gedekt door een afgeknot schilddak met smalle kroonlijst. De dakhelling aan de voorzijde wordt in het midden door het risalerende deel onderbroken. Het middenrisaliet eindigt in een soort dakkapel, die door drie lage 'kantelen' wordt bekroond. De daklijst loopt over in de lijst van de dakkapel. Oorspronkelijk hebben twee schoorstenen op het dak gestaan, die nu ontbreken. De arbeiderswoningen zijn uit bruine bakstenen opgetrokken; voor de decoratieve elementen in de gevelbanden en de bogen zijn gele bakstenen gebruikt.
De voorgevel wordt door het middenrisaliet in twee spiegelbeeldige delen verdeeld. De voordeur bevindt zich in het middenrisaliet; aan weerszijden bevinden zich twee zesruitsvensters. Aan weerszijden van deze vensters bevinden zich rechts een vierruitsvenster en links een blind venster. Boven de vensters trommelvelden met mozaïek bakstenendecoratie en een gebogen strek met sluit- een aanzetstenen. In de dakkapel boven de voordeur bevindt zich een kleiner zesruitsvenster met strekboog en aanzet- en sluitstenen. De achtergevel van nr. 2 loopt in een L-vormige inham terug. In de korte poot van de L bevinden zich een deur en een venster. Deze kijken uit op de achterkant, op een kleine binnenplaats. De oostelijke zijgevel heeft aan de achterzijde een venster. De kortere westelijke zijgevel is blind.
De indeling per woning omvat een portaal, een keuken, een kamer en een slaapkamer.

De twee onder één kap-woning van het type A aan de Nieuweweg 2 en 4, horend bij het sociale woningbouwcomplex in het Havengebied, is van cultuurhistorisch belang:

The block of WORKERS' DWELLINGS at Nieuweweg 2 and 4 was built in 1910 to the design of architect L. Torenbeek; the contractor was R. Krijtenburg from Harlingen. Description
The semi-detached dwellings at Nieuweweg 2 and 4 are the only two dwellings within the complex belonging to type A. The block has a rectangular floor plan and is one storey high, with an attic storey. The facade on the street side is divided into two by a central risalit. The block is covered by a truncated hipped roof with narrow cornice. The roof slope at the front is interrupted in the middle by the projecting section. The central risalit terminates in a kind of roof dormer, which is crowned by three low 'crenellations'. The roof line flows into the cornice of the roof dormer. Originally two chimneys stood on the roof, which are now missing. The workers' dwellings are built in brown brick; yellow brick has been used for the decorative elements in the facade bands and the arches.
The front facade is divided into two mirror-image parts by the central risalit. The front door is located in the central risalit; on either side are two six-pane windows. To either side of these windows are on the right a four-pane window and on the left a blank window. Above the windows are drum panels with mosaic brick decoration and a curved band course with closing and setting stones. In the roof dormer above the front door is a smaller six-pane window with band course and setting and closing stones. The rear gable of no. 2 recedes in an L-shaped recess. In the short leg of the L is a door and a window. These look out onto the back, onto a small courtyard. The eastern side gable has a window on the rear side. The shorter western side gable is blank.
The layout per dwelling comprises a porch, a kitchen, a room and a bedroom.

The semi-detached dwelling of type A at Nieuweweg 2 and 4, forming part of the social housing complex in the Harbour Area, is of cultural historical importance:
