Omschrijving

Description
FORTIFICATION WITH FIVE CASEMATES FROM 1694: earthen elevation or fortification (cavalier) building remains containing elements from the castle on this site which was heavily damaged in 1674, and which served as an artillery position and for the protection of the arsenal, internally there are five barrel-vaulted rooms with an exit in the brick front wall at the "arsenaalplein". Front wall further divided by two arched windows with shutters on either side of the doors, a similar window with shutters above the door with the exception of the door on the far right where the wall has been broken through (1898) and executed with a high-placed thermal window. On the fortification, remains of the landscape-style garden are still recognisable.
Valuation
The fortification or cavalier with five casemates from 1694 possesses age value, is of general cultural-historical importance because it is a rare and well-preserved example of military architecture and as such is also of architectural-historical significance. Because of the castle of Grave remains incorporated in the fortification, the object has archaeological, architectural and construction-historical importance. Furthermore, the transformation of the fortification originally erected as a defensive work into a recreational walking area is to be valued as culturally significant. The object in character and appearance forms a structural and image-defining component of the historical complex on the south-western bastion of the city and as such is to be characterised as being of general cultural-historical importance.
