Omschrijving

Description
FORMER POWDER MAGAZINE FROM 1689, CONVERTED BY J. VAN LOKHORST INTO A CHAPEL IN 1898: a compact brick building on a rectangular floor plan and covered with a gabled roof bearing red old-Dutch tiles. The side facades are articulated with brick buttresses, the rear facade (north) with top and shoulder pieces of Bentheim sandstone and profiled corbels, the front facade (south) with a mortared bell-cote above a wide thermal window with simple brick tracery and a facade stone with date 1689. Against the front facade a lower, flat-roofed brick entrance portal (from 1831, roof with slightly projecting coping from 1898) with rounded windows in west and east facades. Internally a barrel vault (1689), large entrance doors, stained glass (1898) and relocated holy water stoup (1898).
Valuation
The former POWDER MAGAZINE has architectural and historical construction value as a rare example of the conversion of a military storage building into an ecclesiastical building whereby the primary architectural characteristics of both building types (for example heavily executed masonry and defensive closure respectively buttresses and bell-cote) have been convincingly assimilated following conversion by architect J. van Lokhorst in 1898 into a chapel; in nature and appearance the former powder magazine is a structural and characteristically defining component of the historical complex on the southwestern bastion of the city and as such is of general cultural historical importance. Description of component (3) CAVALIER WITH FIVE CASEMATES FROM 1694: an earth embankment or cavalier containing construction remains of the castle on this site heavily damaged in 1674, and having served as a gun emplacement and for the protection of the arsenal, internally five spaces are present covered with barrel vaults with access in the brick front wall at the "arsenal square". Front wall further articulated by two arched windows with shutters on either side of the doors, a likewise window with shutters above the door with the exception of the door on the far right where the wall has been removed (1898) and has been replaced with a high-placed thermal window. On the cavalier remains of the landscape-style pleasure garden are still recognisable.
Valuation
The cavalier or gun platform with five casemates from 1694 possesses age value, is of general cultural historical importance because it is a rare and intact example of military construction and as such is also of architectural historical significance. Due to the remains of the castle of Grave incorporated in the cavalier, the object represents archaeological, architectural and historical construction importance. Furthermore, the transformation of the cavalier originally erected as a fortification into a recreational walking area is regarded as culturally historically valuable. The object forms in nature and appearance a structural and characteristically defining component of the historical complex on the southwestern bastion of the city and is as such to be characterised as being of general cultural historical importance.
