The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Three-aisle neo-Gothic CLOISTER CHURCH, built in 1899-1900 by contractor J. Reggers, to a design by architect Johannes Kayser and commissioned by the Sisters Onder de Bogen. The church (building G) is situated in the inner courtyard of the cloister, running perpendicular to the so-called Vincentiuszaal (building H). For the construction of this cloister church, part of the thirteenth-century town wall had to be demolished. The interior of the chapel was simplified in the nineteen-sixties. The extensions to the north aisle are excluded from protection.

Description

Cloister church on cruciform floor plan, with pentagonal apse, transept arms with flat terminations and built-out chapels on the west side. The whole is constructed in brick, laid in English bond. Nave with four bays, separated from each other by tapering buttresses with ashlar capping. Each bay has in the clerestory a coupled pointed-arch three-light window in a herringbone-pattern list of lighter-coloured brick; in the side aisle coupled, pointed-arch two-light windows with a light-red brick list. In the gables of the transept arms a coupled, symmetrical five-light window is placed. Combined block and dentil decoration under the drip moulding. Ashlar sills and sill mouldings.

The cloister church is covered by gabled, hipped and half-hipped roofs with slate. Ridge cresting. Six small roof dormers with wrought-iron spires.

In the rich INTERIOR are among other things: the ten black marble columns; partition walls with triforium galleries and clerestory with the pointed arches and windows alternately framed with red and yellow brick; the stained-glass windows and the altarpieces.

Valuation

The cloister church is of cultural-historical importance as a distinctive expression of spiritual development. The building possesses regional architectural-historical qualities by virtue of its neo-Gothic architectural style, the involvement of architect Johannes Kayser, the aesthetics and the richly ornamented interior.

The church, as an inalienable part of the cloister complex of the Sisters Onder de Bogen, is situated in the protected townscape of Maastricht and is strongly connected to the city's expansion through its location on the site of the former thirteenth-century town wall. The church furthermore possesses a high degree of architectural integrity and a reasonable degree of architectural-historical rarity.
