Inleiding
Neo-gothisch POORTGEBOUW van het kloostercomplex van de Zusters Onder de Bogen, 1870-1871, ook aangeduid als gebouw N, de Jozefbouw of de Bogeningang. Gesitueerd tussen de twaalfde eeuwse bogen die het westwerk van de St.Servaaskerk steunen en oorspronkelijk de verbinding vormden met de proosdij, de ambtswoning van de proost van het kapittel van St.Servaas.
Omschrijving
Rechthoekige plattegrond, in dwarsrichting ten opzichte van het St.Servaasklooster. Asymmetrische lijstgevel over drie bouwlagen, waarachter een bouwvolume schuil gaat onder een zadeldak met zinken bedekking.
Bakstenen gevel, gemetseld in kruisverband. Geprofileerde plint met hardstenen lijst. Natuurstenen dorpels en vensterlijsten.
Segmentboogvormige strekken met gele bakstenen aanzet- en sluitstenen.
Sierankers. Natuurstenen gevelstenen met vierpasornament.
De gevel telt vijf vensterassen waarin rechthoekige kruiskozijnen met zandstenen traceringen; spitsboogvormige vensterlijsten met verticale zandstenen traceringen en driepas bovenlichten met glas-in-lood; oeil-de-boeuf-vensters met driepas; zowel segmentboogvormige als rechthoekige geornamenteerde natuurstenen deurlijsten, verticale bovenlichttraceringen. Een daarvan is voorzien van het beeld van de H. Carolus Borromeus uit 1873.
Het poortgebouw van het kloostercomplex beschikt over een waardevol INTERIEUR waarin onder meer de geornamenteerde tegellambrizeringen en tegelvloeren van belang zijn.
Waardering
Het poortgebouw van het kloostercomplex Onder de Bogen is van cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke en typologische ontwikkeling. Het poortgebouw is vanwege de bouwstijl, de esthetische kwaliteit, het materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek van groot architectuurhistorisch belang. Het poortgebouw is gesitueerd in het beschermde stadsgezicht Maastricht, is vanwege de situering verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de stad en is van zeer groot belang voor het aanzien van de stad. Het pand beschikt over een redelijke mate van architectonische gaafheid en is van belang in relatie tot de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de Maastrichtse binnenstad.

Neo-gothic GATEWAY BUILDING of the convent complex of the Sisters Under the Arches, 1870-1871, also designated as building N, the Joseph Building or the Arch Entrance. Situated between the twelfth-century arches supporting the west tower of the St.Servaas Church and originally forming the connection with the provost's house, the official residence of the provost of the chapter of St.Servaas.
Description
Rectangular floor plan, transverse to the St.Servaas convent. Asymmetrical cornice-topped facade over three storeys, concealing a building volume beneath a gabled roof with zinc covering.
Brick facade, laid in English bond. Profiled plinth with hardstone moulding. Natural stone sills and window mouldings.
Segmental arch sills with yellow brick setting and closing stones.
Ornamental wall anchors. Natural stone facade stones with quatrefoil ornament.
The facade has five window bays containing rectangular cross windows with sandstone tracery; pointed arch window mouldings with vertical sandstone tracery and trefoil fanlights with leaded glass; oeil-de-boeuf windows with trefoil; both segmental arch and rectangular ornamented natural stone door mouldings, vertical fanlight tracery. One of these is provided with an image of St. Carolus Borromeus from 1873.
The gateway building of the convent complex has a valuable INTERIOR in which the ornamented tile wainscotting and tile floors are of particular importance.
