Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Historical LANDSCAPE PARK in landscape style, realized in 1867 by the Regout family at the location of the Kruismolen of the Meerssense Proosdij with associated layout (cf. Topographic and Military Map, 1842). According to family tradition, the layout was designed by a Belgian architect. The garden architect Gindra was presumably the designer of the park, given the stylistic correspondence of the layout of Kruisdonk with his other designs and given his involvement with the adjacent parks of Vaeshartelt and Petit Suisse, both at the time also possessions of the Regout family. The pond on the east side was laid out in 1922 by garden architect P.F. Ter Steeg.
Description
The layout consists of three slightly undulating meadows in landscape style, bordering the north, east and southwest sides of the house. On the south side is the current driveway. This was most likely created around 1900, at the same time as the construction of the porter's lodge and the coach house. The original driveway on the southwest side is no longer in use. The park meadows are intersected by a pattern of winding paths running in generous curves.
The walk is framed by groups of trees (currently lime, plane, chestnut, ash, beech, copper beech, oak, conifers, acacia) and shrubs (rhododendron, yew) which furthermore serve as coulisses for the views over the pond areas and park meadows. In the park meadows a few solitary trees (currently copper beech).
The meadow on the east side is of great value as a view within the layout. The oak avenue towards Vaeshartelt (Oude Rijksweg) borders the park on the southwest side. On the northeast side of the house is an extensive pond area in landscape style. The pond on the east side was laid out in 1922 by garden architect P.F. Ter Steeg. He presumably also designed the terrace section, which serves as a transitional element between the house and the aforementioned pond area. The balustrade now present was erected in 1987 and is of subordinate importance for protection.
Ornamental weir with overflow on the south side of the eastern pond area, consisting of a brick, vault-like construction, under the walking path running there. On the spillway side a waterfall, framed by large blocks of artificial stone. The weir presumably dates from 1922 and has, in addition to ornamental value, also functional significance: it regulates the water level of the pond area. On the southwest side is a weir with overflow from the northeastern pond to the surrounding moat.
Bridge situated on the northeast side of the manor house, consisting of an iron bridge deck clad with clinker tiles. On either side of the bridge a decorative wrought-iron railing with a pattern of diamond-shaped uprights in straight bays and wooden handrail. The bridge rests on red brick retaining walls, which are clad with artificial stone in rustica. The bridge, which dates from the end of the 19th century, is of great ornamental value.
Valuation
The landscape park Kruisdonk is of very great cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural, socio-economic, landscape and typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the layout in landscape style and the involvement of garden architects Gindra and Ter Steeg. The park is an essential component of the Kruisdonk estate, is of great significance for the regional development by virtue of its location, is of particular importance for the character of the region and has a historical-spatial relationship with the watercourses that have long been present.
The park has remained highly intact and is of great importance in relation to the visual integrity of the surrounding landscape. Moreover, the landscape park Kruisdonk has considerable typological and functional rarity value.
