Omschrijving
Inleiding
A, B, C, D, D, C, C, D, D, D, C, C, D, D, C, B, A, B, C, C.

Description
Introduction
20 WORKERS' DWELLINGS, 2 SHOPS, 1919, as a whole a continuous U-shaped streetfront. Built by commission of the socialist Housing Association Beter Wonen, to a design by the Amsterdam architects Z. Gulden and J. Geldmaker, in a style influenced by the Amsterdam School. These properties were provided with a wooden storage shed in 1919 and renovated in 1993. All ancillary and outbuildings are excluded from protection.
Description
Rhythmically articulated, U-shaped streetfront with three housing types (B, C, D) and two shops of type A. This streetfront is composed from the first dwelling on the Th. Schaepkensstraat to the last on the Coclerstraat as follows: type C, B, A, B, C, D, D, C, C, D, D, D, C, C, D, D, C, B, A, B, C, C.
With the exception of the corner properties of type A (wedge-shaped), and the houses of type B located on either side thereof (L-shaped), the terraced dwellings (types C and D) have rectangular plans. The floor areas of the housing types C are larger.
The properties of types B, C and D have one storey plus attic storey under bituminous flat roofs, whose steep roof slopes are covered with characteristic red tiles.
For the properties of type D, this roof slope extends to a gable with decorative brickwork and ornamental masonry. In the roof slope there is a small attic window. The properties of type B and C have a rounded porch partition with porch windows, which continues in a roof dormer with two wooden window frames on either side, plus a large attic window.
The rear facades of type C and D are identical: a cross window on the front and rear facade and a back door with sidelights on the ground floor, a threefold vertically articulated window frame in the steep roof slope.
The corner properties of type A have two storeys under tent roofs with insert dormers and are characterised by a chamfered corner section. The entrance door with two sidelights is placed in this. Gables with decorative brickwork on either side of the corner section. The roofs are provided with a bituminous roof covering.
The brick facades are built on a tuff frame with broad string course, have masonry above the windows and porches, lightly moulded porch cornices, decorative consoles under the facade edges, decorative brickwork in the moulded gable panels and brick flowerbeds on consoles under the gable windows.
All window frames were originally provided with small glazing bars. The original panel doors with casement windows have been replaced.
Valuation
The streetfront is of great cultural historical importance as a particular expression of socio-economic development. The architectural historical values are determined by the building style, the involvement of the architects Gulden and Geldmaker, the aesthetic qualities of their design, the particular use of material and the ornamentation. The whole forms an essential part of a valuable urban structure from the first quarter of the twentieth century, is connected, due to its location, with the development of the city, and is of significance for the appearance of Maastricht. The housing group Van de Berghstraat e.o. possesses a reasonable degree of integrity and supraregional cultural and architectural historical rarity value.
