Inleiding

Description
Introduction
CRAFT SCHOOL with PORTER'S LODGE in neo-Renaissance style, 1911, built according to a design by architect Burgers, commissioned by the Association "Craft School for Maastricht and Surroundings". The building is situated lengthwise in relation to the St.Maartenslaan. The building volumes at the rear facade were demolished due to the addition of a film theatre in 1993-1994. The added film theatre is excluded from protection.
Description
Main volume of the former Craft School with two storeys plus basement and mansard storey on a T-shaped floor plan.
Fully symmetrical architecture, composed of a central volume of seven bays (with an extended staircase block perpendicular to the rear facade), separated by means of two stepped gable walls from two side volumes of five bays.
The central volume is characterised by a projecting central section of three bays, with a centrally placed entrance with round-arched natural stone moulding ornamented with pilaster motifs, voussoirs and corner stones, resting on stone bases. Four stone steps.
Above, in the second storey, a double cross window, below which a facade moulding with the inscription "Technische School" and a flagpole. This window is flanked on either side by double glazed doors, in front of which are six balusters. The whole is crowned by a stepped gable with a round wooden, nine-part arched top gable window, ornamental wall anchors, anchors in the form of the construction year 1911, plus a double cross window with sidelights. The recessed facade sections on either side each have two bays, are provided with round-arched friezes and terminate in a small stepped gable with cross window.
The side volumes of five bays are likewise crowned by a stepped gable with pinnacle centrally placed over three bays, resting on pilasters with lion-head decorations in the consoles. The round-arched filler in the top gable is provided with a stuccoed shell motif. The side facades of the corner volumes are likewise provided with a stepped gable.
The rear facade is almost entirely obscured from view by the new building. The small remaining rear facade sections are provided with protective cladding. In the eastern side facade, in which a new staircase has been created, two window bays remain. The western side facade has been modified only to a limited extent, but is obscured from view except for one window bay and the stepped gable.
Round-arched, double wooden panel door with vertically subdivided fanlight in ornamented natural stone moulding, including diamond heads, composite capitals, voussoirs of which the central one is provided with a lion head, on either side of the round arch a plaque with the Dutch Lion and the Limburgian provincial coat of arms.
Rectangular, both double and single wooden cross windows with tracery in stone and marl, small glazing bars in the rectangular wooden window panes, leaded fanlights in the central building volume with entrance section. Round wooden top gable windows with nine-pane glazing bars.
Gabled roofs and recessed hipped roofs with clay tiles and gutters on consoles, recessed between stepped gable walls. The rear roof planes are partly provided with new Tuile du Nord tiles. The rear roof plane of the west wing is provided with cross tiles. Two roof dormers on the central middle section. Recent pivot windows in front and rear roof plane.
Staircase under hipped roof.
The whole is provided with a profiled plinth in Kunrader stone with basement openings, stone plinth moulding, stone corner pieces; brick construction in bond with window tracery in stone and marl, marl speckled courses, consoles, stepped gable cappings and ornamental wall anchors.
The windows are alternately placed in segment- or round-arched mouldings with fillers. In the arches are marl corner stones with diamond heads and stuccoed voussoirs in the form of lion heads. In the fillers of the second storey and in the centre sections of the side volumes many facade plaques, on which include the coats of arms of Limburg and Netherlands, sayings such as "Rust rusts, knowledge is power, labour ennobles, practice makes the master, pray and work" and depictions of tools such as hammers and brushes.
Brick plaits in the window fillers of the second storey of the side volumes.
The PORTER'S LODGE on the east side, which is constructed in the same style and building materials, is connected to the school via a passage renewed at the rear of one storey under flat roof with raised light moulding, containing four horizontally subdivided rectangular wooden two-pane windows and a stone cornice with water spouts. The lodge has one storey, a basement and an attic storey on a rectangular floor plan under gabled roofs with a T-shaped ridge line.
Gutters on corbels. Decorative, steeply pitched ridge chimney with bevelled corners and round-arched mouldings with roll courses. Recessed roof cap with stepped roof dormer. Stepped gable ends. Rectangular wooden panel door with tracery in the fanlight, two rectangular wooden four-pane windows. Segmental arches with roll courses and stretchers. Marl corner stones in diamond-head form, stuccoed voussoirs with animal heads.
Two oval oeil-de-boeuf windows in marl mouldings in the top gable facing the street, round-arched wooden window with covered fanlight and six-pane glazing bars in the left side facade. Symmetrical side facade on Turennestraat, above which two recessed roof dormers with stepped gables.
Cross windows with tracery in marl and stone, stone threshold mouldings in the first storey. The rear facade terminates in a stepped gable, extension under a catslide roof with stepped gable ends, sealed segmental arch-shaped door moulding.
In the INTERIOR of the school the layout has remained largely intact, as new office and business spaces have been created using plasterboard. The walls, with the exception of corridor and door mouldings, are entirely plastered white. Of importance are, among others, the tiled floors; the central staircase with stone steps, wrought-iron balustrade, wooden handrail; entrance with antechamber, double round-arched wooden hinged doors with vertically subdivided fanlight provide access to the central hall, in which brick vaults and steel I-beams can still be distinguished in the ceilings.
Valuation
The former Craft School with porter's lodge is of cultural-historical importance as a distinctive expression of a socio-economic development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the architectural style, the involvement of architect Burgers, the very high aesthetic qualities and the rich varied, partly region-specific use of materials. From the perspective of ensemble values, the school is a very important part of the Wyck district, is closely linked to the city's development due to its location and is of particular significance for the appearance of Maastricht.
The remaining building section is architecturally intact and is of great importance in relation to the structural visual integrity of the urban environment. Moreover, the school has considerable architectural-historical rarity value.
