Inleiding
SLUIS MET OPHAALBRUG tussen de Maas en en het havenbassin van de in 1826 gereedgekomen Zuid-Willemsvaart. De ophaalbrug en de sluisdeuren werd in 1931 vernieuwd.

In baksteen opgetrokken sluiskolk, gemetseld in kruisverband.
Hardstenen sluis- en kaderanden. Dubbele houten sluisdeuren met bouwjaaraanduiding 1931. Aan de Bassinzijde bevindt zich een eenvoudige ophaalbrug met driekante vullingen in de hoeken van de hameipoort. Op de hameipoort het opschrift "Gutehoffnungshutte 40 N.P." Twee langsschoren. Licht geboogde balans met ballastkist aan de zuidzijde. Twee hangstangen dragen de met een houten rijdek beklede val. Aan weerszijden van brug en sluis een eenvoudige smeedijzeren balustrade. De bedieningsinstallaties van sluisdeuren en brug zijn aanwezig.
Waardering
De sluis met ophaalbrug is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische, sociaal-economische en geografische ontwikkeling. De architectuurhistorische waarden van sluis en brug zijn bouwtechnisch bescheiden en worden verder bepaald door de esthetische waarden van het geheel. De sluis met ophaalbrug vormt een essentieel onderdeel van het beschermde stadsgezicht Maastricht, is vanwege de situering in de 19e eeuwse industriewijk rond het Bassin verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de stad, is van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van Maastricht en heeft een historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met de Maas en het havenbassin van de Zuid-Willemsvaart. Het geheel verkeert in gave staat en is van belang in relatie tot de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de stedelijke omgeving. Sandstone sluice and frame edges. Double wooden sluice gates with date mark 1931. On the basin side there is a simple lift bridge with triangular fillings at the corners of the portcullis gate. On the portcullis gate the inscription "Gutehoffnungshutte 40 N.P." Two side braces. Slightly curved balance beam with ballast box on the south side. Two suspension rods support the valve clad with a wooden deck. On either side of bridge and sluice a simple wrought-iron balustrade. The operating installations for the sluice gates and bridge are present.
