Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Steel RAILWAY BRIDGE, consisting of a swing bridge and a fixed bridge over the Amstel-Drechtkanaal, which forms part of the former railway line between Uithoorn and Mijdrecht on the Aalsmeer-Nieuwersluis line. The railway bridge was constructed in 1912 on the orders of the H.E.S.M. Since 1987 the bridge had been out of use, but nowadays (1995) the bridge is again in (re)use for the benefit of a rapid bus connection. In this process a road deck has been laid at the location of the rails and a pivot structure has been replaced by a hydraulic system.
Description
The railway bridge consists of two sections: a swing bridge and a fixed bridge. The bridge consists of movable beams, the superstructure in a partially sunken concrete abutment on the Uithoorn side, the pivot structure on an equally partially sunken concrete pier and a second partially sunken concrete pier in the Amstel-Drechtkanaal and the fixed bridge with partially sunken abutment on the Mijdrecht side.
The swing bridge is provided with straight-ended solid-web beams of 34.30 metres in length, which form a double track with a width of 8.10 metres. The superstructure in the abutment ensures by means of a gear construction that the balanced beams on this side settle slightly and rise slightly on the second pier on the Mijdrecht side, whereby they are freed to be able to rotate. The pivot structure with the operating mechanism provides for the rotation of the bridge by driving wheels that run over a trackway. The passage width between the pier and the abutment respectively the second pier is 12.5 metres and is guided by a system of dolphins and restraining structures, which in relation to the fairway are not entirely parallel to the quays, but with the north point pointing somewhat to the west.
The fixed bridge between the second pier and the fixed wall on the Mijdrecht side is 20 metres long and 9 metres wide and is provided with an open lattice superstructure, which ends 'aslant'.
Valuation
The bridge is of general importance from a historical, civil-engineering and structural point of view as a rare and well-preserved example of a steel swing railway bridge from the first decades of the 20th century with riveted steel I-profile beams and steel girders in combination with the application of reinforced concrete. The bridge is also of socio-historical importance as part of the development of infrastructure in this North Holland area which reached its peak in the first quarter of the 20th century, and in particular as a characteristic element of the HESM line from Aalsmeer to Nieuwersluis. Furthermore, the bridge has ensemble value as a visually defining element in relation to the Amstel-Drechtkanaal and in relation to the station building with platform and toilet building on the Stationsstraat in Uithoorn, realised for the benefit of the same railway line.
