Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Detached DWELLING HOUSE, named "Sjalom", oriented northwest/southeast and located in the old village centre on the northwestern bank of the Amstel.
In 1851 the first stone was laid by M.J. Kiebert in the left side facade for a dwelling house on the Dorpsstraat. The building is constructed in a building manner with both neo-gothic and classical motifs. In 1978 the building acquired an office function. In 1989 the building regained a residential function. Against the left side facade (E) a wooden extension with one roof slope was placed. Building traces remain on this facade and on the right side facade (W), where a window was replaced by a door and a small window. In the rear facade on the ground floor the two middle windows have been replaced by French garden doors.
Description
The dwelling house is constructed on an almost square plan in one storey and roof space in alternating bond with hand-formed hard grey brick. The original mortar joints are struck. The gabled roof of the main volume with ridge line parallel to the Dorpsstraat has green glazed tiles on the street side and brown glazed Tuiles du Nord tiles on the rear side. The gabled roofs of the gable ends have a ridge line perpendicular to the Dorpsstraat. A brick plinth finished with a roll moulding is applied all around. The roof gutters on wooden consoles are provided with a cornice profile. The roof edges are decorated with carved wooden wind-braces to which rosettes are attached.
The front facade (N) consists of three bays, the middle one of which, projecting with a porch, is flanked by a six-pane window. All windows are provided with a widened centre mullion with stolp-needle profile and a roll moulding at the top. The wooden window-sills have been replaced by (painted) concrete. A stone step of three treads leads to the front door, consisting of two by three panels placed one above the other. The two middle panels are provided with a glass panel and a cast-iron grille. In both grilles a medallion is incorporated with a mythological representation, depicting a young man being carried away on the back of a ram. Above the door is one large pointed-arch window, flanked by two smaller ones with a neo-gothic window tracery and like profiling. Just below the balcony edge profiled as a simple cornice are four rosette-shaped cast-iron ornamental wall anchors. The cast-iron balcony railing also contains rosettes and an empire trellis-work. The gable end contains a window arrangement to the width of the porch, divided in three by two mullions, of which the two outer wings contain windows and the middle section contains inward-opening balcony doors. Each opening consists of a rabated panel, above which three by two panes, separated by a thickened centre mullion with stolp-needle profile. The upper panes are decorated with a round-arched neo-classical window tracery. In the middle above the door a tablet is attached with the word "Sjalom" painted on it. The sides of the gable ends are finished with slate in roof-tile bond, with two small windows with octagonal tracery set aside just below the roof edge placed horizontally.
The left side facade (E) shows repaired masonry and traces of a wooden extension. Originally a door was located in the middle of the facade. In the front part of the facade on the ground floor two six-pane windows are installed and at the top in the middle one four-pane window. Below the front six-pane window, at plinth level, is a cellar window.
The right side facade (W) was originally provided with three six-pane windows, regularly distributed over the facade, and a four-pane window centrally above the middle window. This middle window has been replaced by a (panel) door, with a small square window beside it. The roll moulding of the missing six-pane window has been retained, as have other traces such as irregular masonry.
The rear facade (S) is provided on the ground floor with four and in the gable end with three six-pane windows. The woodwork at the windows has been partly restored. Originally the windows were provided with shutters, of which the hinges are still present.
Valuation
The building Sjalom is of general importance from an architectural-historical point of view as a well-preserved example of a dwelling house for the well-to-do bourgeoisie from the middle of the 19th century in the North Holland countryside and because of the rare combination of neo-gothic and neo-classical formal elements on the front facade. The building is of importance from a social-historical point of view as a good and largely well-preserved example of a rich middle-class dwelling house from the middle of the 19th century and as such representative of the residential culture in that period in North Holland.
