Omschrijving woonhuis Essenlaan 62-64.
Inleiding:
WOONHUIS gerealiseerd in 1903 in op de Amerikaanse architectuur van L. Sullivan geïnspireerde Overgangsstijl naar ontwerp van de Rotterdamse architect J.P. Stok Wzn. Links van het woonhuis een aanbouw van één bouwlaag met dwars pannen zadeldak in identieke materialen en bouwtrant (huisnummer 62), daterend uit de jaren twintig.
Omschrijving:
Het woonhuis is opgetrokken op een rechthoekig grondvlak in natuurstenen blokken op een hardstenen rustica plint en telt twee bouwlagen met souterrain. Hout is gebruikt voor deuren, raamkozijnen, balkons, daklijsten etc.
Het woonhuis heeft een uitspringend geveldeel van één bouwlaag waarin zich het ingangsportaal en rechts daarvan een gebogen houten erker bevinden. Boven beide bouwvolumes bevinden zich op de verdieping balkons met houten balustrade. De balusters van het gebogen balkon vormen een voortzetting van de kozijnen van de eronder gelegen erker. Boven de balkondeuren is over de gehele breedte van beide balkons een houten pergola aangebracht. Het gebogen balkon wordt aan weerszijden begrensd door de tot boven de dakrand opgetrokken zijmuurvlakken van de begane grond (links met raamopening) en afgedekt door het ver overkragende zadeldak. Op de top van de opgetrokken zijmuurvlakken bevinden zich gebeeldhouwde dierfiguren. De windveren voor het zadeldak hebben een ronde beëindiging.
Het middelste (voor)geveldeel, waarvoor zich het via vier traptreden te bereiken ingangsportiek bevindt, heeft een plat dak met een overstekende daklijst en op de hoek een gebeeldhouwde dierfiguur.
De rechthoekige vensters in de voorgevel variëren in grootte. Op de begane grond van links naar rechts: twee grote vensters met bovenlicht; voor het ingangsportiek twee smalle glas-in lood vensters en in de erker vijf ramen met glas-in-lood bovenlichten. Op de verdieping van links naar rechts: twee kleinere ramen met bovenlicht en op de balkons balkondeuren met grote ramen. Op het gebogen balkon worden de balkondeuren geflankeerd door smallere vensters.
Het woonhuis ligt, evenals de linkeraanbouw van circa 1920, iets terug van de rooilijn. Op de rooilijn een ijzeren hekwerk in eenvoudige Art Nouveau-trant van dezelfde hoogte als de rustica plint van het woonhuis.

DWELLING realised in 1903 in Transitional style inspired by the American architecture of L. Sullivan after a design by Rotterdam architect J.P. Stok Wzn. To the left of the dwelling an extension of one storey with transverse Spanish tile gabled roof in identical materials and building style (house number 62), dating from the nineteen-twenties.
Description:
The dwelling is constructed on a rectangular ground plan in natural stone blocks on a hardstone rusticated plinth and has two storeys with basement. Wood is used for doors, window frames, balconies, roof edges etc.
The dwelling has a projecting facade section of one storey in which are located the entrance portico and to the right of it a curved wooden bay window. Above both building volumes are balconies with wooden balustrades on the upper storey. The balusters of the curved balcony form a continuation of the frames of the bay window below it. Above the balcony doors a wooden pergola is installed across the full width of both balconies. The curved balcony is bounded on both sides by the side wall surfaces of the ground floor (on the left with window opening) carried up above the roof edge and covered by the far overhanging gabled roof. On top of the carried-up side wall surfaces are sculptured animal figures. The weathervanes for the gabled roof have a rounded termination.
The middle (front) facade section, in front of which is the entrance portico accessible via four steps, has a flat roof with an overhanging roof edge and on the corner a sculptured animal figure.
The rectangular windows in the front facade vary in size. On the ground floor from left to right: two large windows with fanlight; flanking the entrance portico two narrow leaded glass windows and in the bay window five frames with leaded glass fanlights. On the upper storey from left to right: two smaller frames with fanlight and on the balconies balcony doors with large windows. On the curved balcony the balcony doors are flanked by narrower windows.
The dwelling, like the left extension of circa 1920, is set back slightly from the building line. On the building line iron railing in simple Art Nouveau style of the same height as the rusticated plinth of the dwelling.
Valuation:
Dwelling executed in a rare style for the Netherlands - Transitional style, inspired by American prairie houses - with remarkable detailing and use of materials, as such of general importance because of architectural and cultural-historical values.
