Introduction

Eclectic COUNTRY HOUSE named Villa Canne, second half of the 19th century-early 20th century, in a PARK SETTING. Built around the middle of the nineteenth century on the instruction of the Maastricht industrialist Petrus Regout. In 1879 extended at the right side facade with a kitchen and servants' quarters, in 1905 remodelled to the design of architect Sandhövel and around 1920 provided with a renewed roof truss structure. In 1976 the blind left side facade received new window frames. The wrought-iron conservatories at the north and east facades have been removed, as has the wrought-iron terrace balustrade at the south facade.

Description

The Villa Canne has a basement, two storeys and an attic storey on a rectangular floor plan, plus an extension of one storey at the western side facade. The house has a slightly pitched hipped roof with roof decorations at front and rear facades. Purple slate tiles in shingle covering. Roof dormers with round-arch pediment and diamond knobs. Roof dormers with vertically articulated three-light windows in the chamfered mansard roof of the extension. Gutters with block dentil molding. Stucco plinth with basement windows in the south facade. Rendered brick construction, stuccoed corner, window, facade and cornice moldings. Ashlar window sills. Facade articulation by means of stucco pilasters. Brick side facades, laid in English bond, ashlar sills. Main volume with symmetrical north and south facades, furnished with three window bays. Central risalits with renewed steel doors including side and fanlights in Jugendstil motif, balconies in the second storey and terminating in gable ends with pediment and roof ridge ornament. Segmental-arch-shaped stuccoed window surrounds with diamond-head ornaments, wooden T-windows and ashlar sills; segmental-arch-shaped double wooden balcony doors behind a wrought-iron balustrade. Vertically articulated segmental-arch-shaped gable-end windows. In west facade of the attached kitchen space a segmental-arch-shaped wooden door with fanlight and recent canopy, beside which a segmental-arch-shaped, vertically articulated side light, two rectangular wooden ungalzed windows. In the second storey of the remaining right side facade profiled brick chimney stacks, a rectangular wooden T-window and a rectangular, double wooden cross window. Cornice with stucco ridges. Against the east facade of the house remains of a grapery with concrete, pseudo-rusticated plant tubs on a terrace with centrally placed ashlar steps. Segmental-arch-shaped T-windows and vertically articulated frames. North facade terrace with steps, recent terrace tiles. Rear facade terrace with mosaic tiles, four centrally placed ashlar steps. Balustrade has been removed.

INTERIOR The layout of the ground floor is unchanged, the layout of the upper floor somewhat adapted. Of importance are among others the marble fireplace units; the parquet floor on the ground floor; stucco rosettes and moldings; wainscoting; panel doors, including four double ones in the central corridor; mosaic tile floors; stairwell with balustrade. The walls of the basement are built in marl.

Villa Canne is situated in a park in which remains of a landscape-style layout are still present. The layout extends southwards to the sharp bend of the Jeker, runs from there eastwards in the direction of the Mergelweg and stops at the access road to the neighbouring water mill. In the garden among others of importance are the solitary tree group in the space in front of the house, some solitary beeches beside and behind the house, the remnant of the woodland planting at the Jeker side, the curving garden path and a valuable green zone to the south of the layout. Two brick gate piers with stucco ornaments, between which a double wrought-iron gate, flank the drive.

Valuation

The originally nineteenth-century industrialist's house Villa Canne is of cultural-historical value as a special expression of a socio-economic and typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, the involvement of architect Sandhövel in the major remodelling of 1905, the aesthetic quality and the ornamentation. The Villa Canne has a strong functional relationship with the carriage houses on the Mergelweg and Nekummerweg, is of importance because of its location, of importance for the appearance of the region and has a historical-spatial relationship with the surrounding park layout. The villa has remained in reasonable condition and is of great importance in relation to the visual integrity of the surrounding landscape. Moreover, there is considerable regional rarity value.
