Inleiding

Introduction

Former COACH HOUSE of the Villa Canne, built around 1905 on the instruction of the Regout family and now in use as a residence. The architecture is characterized by a mixture of styles. Situated on the west side of the villa, directly on the bank of the Jeker. The coach house is largely surrounded by an eighteenth-century mergelstone wall with access gate, already nationally protected.

Description

Coach house with one storey and attic storey on a U-shaped floor plan, partly with cellar. On the south side an extended coachman's house of two storeys under gabled roof. The courtyard of the coach house is closed off by a double, segmental arched wooden entrance gate with glazed panels and is covered by a shallow sloping gabled roof, now clad with zinc. The U-shaped building volume is constructed of brickwork and laid in Flemish bond with cut joints. The front facade on the east side is provided with a plastered plinth (continuing in the courtyard), pilaster strips with yellow brick cross motifs, red-yellow toned stretches, yellow lacing courses, diamond-shaped voussoirs in the segmental arch above the carriage entrance and cross motifs in yellow brick in the cornice. On either side of the carriage entrance three small, segmental arched wooden windows with six-pane glazing bars. Hardstone front threshold stones. Wall anchors indicate the placement of floor joists. The building volume between both wings, originally the harness room, now serves as a kitchen. This volume has been provided for this reason on the rear facade with two new, segmental arched wooden windows. In the rear facade of the former horse stable, three tall, segmental arched, wooden windows have been fitted. The side and rear facades have a lightly profiled brick plinth. The whole is covered by mansard roofs with moulded tiles, provided with roof dormers with wooden round-arched fronts and gutters. The front facade of the coachman's dwelling on the south side is only one window bay wide and is characterized by a round top gable window and decorative yellow stretches. The side facade of this small house has two window bays, the rear facade is blank. Ornamented roof overhang with finial. The slates of this coach house have since been replaced by bitumen. The INTERIOR of the coach house is largely unchanged. In the left wing, behind the double wooden gates of the courtyard, are the coach storage areas. In the right wing, now fitted out as living space, are located behind the segmental arched access doors, among other things, the horse boxes (manufactured by the Brussels constructor Adolph Charlet & Cie), the hay racks and the blue-and-white tiled wall panelling. The original clinker paving, including the cast-iron cover plates, is still present both in the courtyard and in both stables. Vaulted brick ceilings, resting on steel I-profiles. The attic storey is entirely fitted out as living space.

Valuation

The coach house of the Villa Canne is of great cultural-historical value as a relatively recent exponent of a typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, the aesthetic qualities of the whole, the ornamentation and the special relationship between exterior and interior. The coach house has a very strong functional relationship with the Villa Canne and the second coach house on the Mergelweg. The building is of particular importance for the appearance of the Maastricht outlying area, is of importance because of the architectural integrity of both exterior and interior, and is of importance in relation to the visual integrity of the landscape surroundings. Moreover, there is a considerable architectural-historical, typological and functional rarity value.
