Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
DWELLING HOUSE in classical style, dating from 1804 with cellar vaults indicating the 18th century. The house is located on the Hoogstraat, a dam, whose development on both sides forms part of the oldest residential core of Werkendam, but where in the 19th century houses for notables with urban character were built. So too Hoogstraat 49, which has been a doctor's house with practice and pharmacy since 1807.
Description
Single-storey dwelling house with cornice-topped facade and a composite roof with extensive roof dormers. The building is constructed in handmade brick with stretcher bond and thin joints. The roof is covered with Oudhollandse tiles. The five-bay house with natural stone plinth has a stone step of two treads leading to the projecting white-rendered monumental entrance. Above the double panel doors with cast-iron grilles a semicircular fanlight with leaded glass and keystones. On the lintel a flagpole. Against a background of imitation ashlar pattern Ionic pilasters on natural stone base carry the richly profiled main cornice with dentil moulding. The cornice which closes the facade horizontally steps back twice, as does the front facade: beside the entrance and where the roof dormer connects. The latter is incorporated in the central risalit of the front facade and suggests with its three large semicircular windows with opening leaded glass windows a possible later storey. A white plinth and cordon moulding connect the windows of the roof dormer with each other. A cornice on profiled wooden brackets closes this facade. The side facades are rendered in ashlar pattern, contain tall sash windows and are closed off by a profiled eaves moulding on brackets. The rear facade, constructed in handmade brick, has a rear door with pilaster surround and cornice on consoles. The double door and the fanlight have coloured leaded glass filling with geometric motif. This motif also in the design of the bay window which closes off the residential section. Two T-windows with high divided fanlight with leaded glass close off the work wing. Below them two barred cellar windows. In the rear and side facades roof dormers with opening windows in a surround of Ionic pilasters connected by a flattened arch and closed off by a profiled cornice. To the left of the house lies a coach house under a flat roof with three panel doors above which three ten-paned small windows and wooden eaves moulding on brackets.
The house with an elongated rectangular ground plan has retained the original layout with central corridor and rooms on either side. The entrance hall with pilaster articulation with semicircular arch and stucco floral motifs provides access to the marble corridor which ends at the rear door with coloured leaded glass panels. The doors are all panel doors. In various rooms the stucco decoration of Ionic pilasters and floral motifs has been preserved. In particular the front rooms which have retained windows with blinds and stucco decoration with pilasters above the fireplace and floral motifs in the central field and corners of the ceiling. The left front room serves as a waiting room and has in the central field above the fireplace a tondo, in which are depicted attributes of products of land and sea. The right front room is preserved in original Empire style with gold-edged blinds and panel doors and original wallpaper with floral motifs. Sliding doors to the adjacent room. Below a fireplace mantel with scrolls a cast-iron stove dating from ca. 1890.
On the right side/rear of the house lies an extension constructed in handmade brick and under a gabled roof with Oudhollandse tiles reached via a passage. In this lay the original kitchen and scullery; the cellar with barrel vaults of the dwelling house connects to the front part of the extension.
The house has its own separate entrance, a panel door and T-windows on the garden side and in the short garden facade the doors open outward on sash hinges, above which a four-paned window. Next to the stairs to the garden doors lies the old rainwater cellar. Internally this house has retained the beam ceiling and on the upper floor five roof truss structures.
Valuation
The house has cultural-historical value as an example of a house with urban character in one of the so-called Dutch villages. It has architectural-historical value because of the distinctive design of the front facade which is expressed in the combination of the classical cornice-topped facade with the execution of the roof dormer in Dutch Renaissance style. The house is of importance because of the architectural integrity of its exterior and interior, which apart from the main room layout has also retained a room in its original style. Because of its intact exterior the house is character-defining for the streetscape. The large back garden with tall trees and a pentagonal wooden garden house with tent roof dating from the 19th century support the value of the property.
