Inleiding
De TABAKSFABRIEK annex pakhuis is rond 1902 gebouwd in opdracht van de familie Fokke van der Meulen. De lagere aanbouw aan de achterzijde van het hoofdgebouw is van oudere datum. In de fabriek werd de beroemde pruimtabak "Drachtster Kei" vervaardigd.
De zijgevel van de fabriek ligt vrijwel direct aan de openbare weg; aan de voorzijde is een open terrein. De fabriek is sinds enkele jaren buiten gebruik en de oorspronkelijke inrichting is niet meer aanwezig.
Omschrijving
Gebouw op rechthoekige plattegrond bestaande uit twee gedeelten van ongelijke hoogte. Het hoofdgebouw bestaat uit twee bouwlagen en een zolderverdieping onder afgeknot zadeldak, oorspronkelijk gedekt met rode Hollandse pannen. De lagere aanbouw bestaat uit twee bouwlagen onder zadeldak, thans gedekt met golfplaten. De voorgevel van het hoofdgebouw is opgetrokken in roodbruine bakstenen, verlevendigd met witte kalkzandstenen banden. Kalkzandsteen is verder aan de voorgevel decoratief verwerkt: in de penanten op de hoeken van de geveltop, in de afsluitende gemetselde balustrade, in het trommelveld met dambordpatroon boven de dubbele deur en in de rondbogen rond de bovenlichten van de zesruits rondboogvensters. In het trommelveld boven de dubbele deur zat voorheen een gedenksteen. Daarboven een houten paneel met het opschrift: TABAK'S / FABRIEK / ERVEN / FOKKE V.D. MEULEN //.
In de geveltop boven de dubbele deur zijn dubbele zolderdeuren met een hijsbalk.
De in roodbruine bakstenen opgetrokken westelijke zijgevel wordt op de begane grond en op de verdieping ingedeeld door rondboogvensters als aan de voorgevel en een rondboogdeur op de begane grond. De oostelijke zijgevel van het hoofdgebouw en de gevels van de lagere aanbouw zijn opgetrokken in kleine gele handvormbakstenen met slechts enkele rechthoekige vensters en deuren.
Waardering
De voormalige tabaksfabriek uit circa 1902 in Drachten is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch en industrieel-archeologisch belang:
- vanwege de herinnering die het gebouw vormt aan de verloren gegane Drachtster tabaksindustrie,

The TOBACCO FACTORY including storehouse was built around 1902 on behalf of the Fokke van der Meulen family. The lower extension on the rear of the main building is of an older date. The factory manufactured the renowned chewing tobacco "Drachtster Kei".
The side facade of the factory lies almost directly on the public road; at the front is an open area. The factory has been out of use for several years and the original interior is no longer present.
Description
Building on a rectangular floor plan consisting of two sections of unequal height. The main building consists of two storeys and an attic storey under a clipped gabled roof, originally covered with red Dutch tiles. The lower extension consists of two storeys under a gabled roof, now covered with corrugated sheets. The front facade of the main building is constructed in reddish-brown brickwork, enlivened with white calcium silicate bands. Calcium silicate is further applied decoratively on the front facade: in the pilasters on the corners of the gable top, in the concluding masonry balustrade, in the drum-shaped panel with chequerboard pattern above the double door and in the round arches around the fanlights of the six-pane round-arch windows. In the drum-shaped panel above the double door there was formerly a commemorative stone. Above it a wooden panel with the inscription: TABAK'S / FABRIEK / ERVEN / FOKKE V.D. MEULEN //.
In the gable top above the double door are double attic doors with a hoist beam.
The western side facade constructed in reddish-brown brickwork is divided on the ground floor and on the storey by round-arch windows as on the front facade and a round-arch door on the ground floor. The eastern side facade of the main building and the facades of the lower extension are constructed in small yellow hand-moulded bricks with only a few rectangular windows and doors.
Valuation
The former tobacco factory from circa 1902 in Drachten is of general cultural-historical and industrial-archaeological significance:

- as a particular expression of a socio-economic development,
- because of the simple yet carefully worked brickwork architecture with detailed front facade,
