Inleiding
Het woningblok bestaande uit tien ARBEIDERSWONINGEN is onderdeel van het arbeidersbuurtje "Beter Wonen". Het complex ligt rond een groenaanleg en is circa 1920 in Drachten gerealiseerd.
Omschrijving
Het woningblok is opgebouwd uit tien aan elkaar grenzende woningen van één bouwlaag. Het doorlopende zadeldak is gedekt met rode sneldekkers, waar oorspronkelijk rode gegolfde Friese pannen lagen. Op de nok zijn gemetselde schoorstenen. De woningen zijn opgetrokken uit bruine handvormstenen. De voor- en achtergevels worden op de begane grond ingedeeld door vernieuwde kruisvensters onder strek. De toegangsdeuren met bovenlicht onder strek zijn vernieuwd. In het doorlopende dakvlak boven de langsgevel aan de voor- en achterzijde zijn kajuiten met dubbele vensters.
De twee buitenste woningen - nr. 2 en 20 - hebben topgevels aan de straatzijde en daarnaast ook zijtopgevels met kleine vensters. De op het plein georiënteerde topgevels zijn voorzien van siermetselwerk in de geveltoppen, bestaande uit een dubbele rollaag langs de dakrand en verticaal opgemetselde accenten. De zijtopgevels met een dubbele rollaag langs de dakrand als aan de voorgevel, eindigen in een gemetselde schoorsteen met een uitkragende driehoekig gemetselde aanzet. Alle topgevels hebben trapsgewijs getande hoeken ter hoogte van het begin van de sluitgevel.
Achter Beter Wonen nr. 2 bevindt zich een oorspronkelijk losstaande berging, opgetrokken uit bakstenen met een platte dakafsluiting.

The housing block is built up of ten adjoining dwellings of one storey. The continuous gabled roof is covered with red machine-made tiles, where originally red corrugated Frisian tiles were laid. On the ridge are moulded chimneys. The dwellings are constructed from brown hand-moulded bricks. The front and rear facades are divided on the ground floor by renewed cross windows under lintels. The entrance doors with fanlight under lintels have been renewed. In the continuous roof plane above the long facade at the front and rear are skylights with double windows.
The two outer dwellings - nos. 2 and 20 - have gables at the street side and also side gables with small windows. The gables oriented to the square are provided with decorative brickwork in the gable tops, consisting of a double roll course along the roof edge and vertically laid accents. The side gables with a double roll course along the roof edge as on the front facade, end in a moulded chimney with a projecting triangular brick base. All gables have stepped dentilled corners at the height of the start of the closing gable.
Behind Beter Wonen no. 2 is an original detached storage building, constructed from bricks with a flat roof finish.
