Inleiding
De SCHOOL, voorheen de Rijks hogere burgerschool in Drachten is in 1919 gerealiseerd naar ontwerp van de architect J.A.W. Vrijman uit Den Haag in een Frans georiënteerde UM-1800 bouwstijl. Het Drachtster Lyceum maakt tegenwoordig gebruik van het gebouw.
Omschrijving
Het schoolgebouw heeft een liggende E-vormige plattegrond en bestaat uit twee bouwlagen. De noordelijke poot van het hoofdgebouw is verbonden aan een rechthoekig bouwdeel van één bouwlaag. Het mansardedak met ingezwenkte dakschilden van het hoofdgebouw en het afgeplatte schilddak van het noordelijke bouwdeel is gedekt met leien. Een gootlijst op klossen boven een geprofileerde daklijst vormt de markante gevelafsluiting van het uit bruine bakstenen opgetrokken gebouw. De hoektraveeën van de symmetrisch ingedeelde voorgevel springen sterk naar voren, inclusief de dakvlakken.
Het middenrisaliet met de entree wordt bekroond door een fronton, omgeven door een gootlijst op klossen en daklijst; binnen het fronton een ovaal venster met roedeverdeling. De vernieuwde deur ligt in een gemetseld rondboogportiek. Boven het portiek is een door kleine voluten omlijst mozaïek met de tekst RIJKSHOOGEREBURGERSCHOOL, geflankeerd door de wapens van Friesland en van Smallingerland. Recht boven de entree is een gemetselde dakruiter met uurwerk onder tentdakje. In het dakschild voorts kapellen waarin vensters met roedeverdeling en op de nok vier schoorstenen met schoorsteenborden.
De overige gevelindeling aan de voor-, zij-, en achterzijde van het gebouw is grotendeels aan elkaar gelijk. De vensterpartijen liggen in iets in de gevel terugliggende muurvlakken, doorlopend over de twee bouwlagen. In de hoekrisalieten aan de voorgevel zijn dergelijke smalle terugliggende muurvlakken zonder vensters, waardoor lisenen lijken te ontstaan.
De hoge kruis- en H-vensters onder strek met natuurstenen onderdorpels hadden oorspronkelijk een roedeverdeling.
De gevelindeling, het materiaalgebruik en de detaillering van het noordelijke bouwdeel zijn gelijk aan de rest van het gebouw. De zesruitsvensters en kozijnen zijn hier vernieuwd, evenals een brede deur in de verbindende lage "hals".

De vm. Rijks Hogere Burgerschool uit 1919 te Drachten is van cultuurhistorisch en architectonisch belang vanwege:

The SCHOOL, formerly the Royal Higher Secondary School in Drachten was realised in 1919 according to a design by architect J.A.W. Vrijman from The Hague in a French-oriented UM-1800 building style. The Drachten Lyceum currently makes use of the building.
Description
The school building has a horizontal E-shaped floor plan and consists of two storeys. The northern wing of the main building is connected to a rectangular building section of one storey. The mansard roof with curved roof slopes of the main building and the flattened hipped roof of the northern building section is covered with slate. A gutter on corbels above a profiled cornice forms the striking facade termination of the building constructed in brown brick. The corner bays of the symmetrically arranged front facade project strongly forward, including the roof planes.
The central projection with the entrance is crowned by a pediment, surrounded by a gutter on corbels and cornice; within the pediment an oval window with glazing bars. The renewed door lies in a brick round-arched portico. Above the portico is a mosaic framed by small volutes with the text RIJKSHOOGEREBURGERSCHOOL, flanked by the coats of arms of Friesland and Smallingerland. Directly above the entrance is a brick roof structure with a clock under a small pyramidal roof. In the roof slope also dormers with windows featuring glazing bars and on the ridge four chimneys with chimney caps.
The remaining facade arrangement on the front, side, and rear of the building is largely the same. The window arrangements lie in slightly recessed wall surfaces, continuous over the two storeys. In the corner projections on the front facade are such narrow recessed wall surfaces without windows, thereby creating the appearance of pilasters.
The tall cross and H-windows under lintel with natural stone sills originally had glazing bars.
The facade arrangement, material use and detailing of the northern building section are the same as the rest of the building. The six-light windows and frames have been renewed here, as has a wide door in the connecting low "neck".
