Inleiding

Introduction

The State Agricultural Winter School built in 1921 was constructed according to preliminary designs by R. Wibbelink. After his death, municipal architect C.R. de Boer completed the design and supervised the work, which was carried out by Drachten carpenter/contractor Hendrik Hendriks. The construction of the R.L.W. school came about as a result of growing demand for information and development in the agricultural field at the beginning of the twentieth century. There was a desire for a permanent educational institution where agricultural courses could be held in winter. The R.L.W. school, situated at a crossroads, was built in the Interbellum style. The building is furnished with stained glass windows designed by Theo van Doesburg, which are located above the former main entrance on the Torenstraat ("Kleine Pastorale") and in the left side facade (Houtlaan) at the level of the stairwell on the upper storey ("Grote Pastorale"). Van Doesburg also designed a colour scheme of secondary colours for the exterior and interior woodwork, with which he wished to relate the school to the houses of the Papegaaienbuurt opposite the street, which are furnished with primary colours. Because considerable controversy had arisen at the time over the controversial colours, they were not applied. The school director and the inspector of agricultural education found that "these were not conducive to the calm of the pupils and to their attention during lessons". In 1988, the woodwork of the school was nevertheless furnished with the originally planned orange-green-violet colour combination. Over time, the school has undergone various renovations and extensions, during which the main volume has largely remained intact.

At present, the school building is no longer in use as such.

Description

The brick school building has a rectangular plan, with the front building section of the original structure having two storeys under the roof and the rear section one storey. The external facades are furnished with decorative brickwork which gives the whole a lively appearance. The roof surfaces of the front building section and the side roof surfaces of the rear section are covered with grey Flemish tiles. The tiles of the rear roof surface have been replaced with rapid-covering shingles. Both the front roof surface and the side roof surfaces of the front building section contain a roof dormer with windows with six-pane glazing bars. In addition, some roof windows and an emergency exit were later installed in the rear building section between the rafters. The facades are furnished with tuff stone windows below a sandstone drip moulding. The windows in the front and side facades are identical, with the exception of the two somewhat narrower windows in the front facade on the upper storey and the two stained glass windows in the side facade. The original main entrance with wrought iron ornamental work is located in the centre of the symmetrically constructed front facade. Between this entrance and the sandstone coping stone with basket-weave arch is the stained glass window designed by Van Doesburg, "Kleine Pastorale", depicting four agricultural motifs: a sower, a reaper, a root-lifter and a digger. Above this, the inscription "R.L.W. SCHOOL" has been placed in a sandstone plaque. On the left side facade are two cuckoo windows with glass covers. Above the double entrance door in this facade are the other stained glass windows designed by Van Doesburg. The windows have the same representation as those in the front facade but with different dimensions ("Grote Pastorale"). After an exhibition in the nineteen-sixties in Eindhoven, these stained glass windows were mistakenly replaced in mirror image. In 1989, all stained glass windows were restored, during which broken panes were replaced.

The entrances in the front facade and the side facade are accessible by means of a brick, raised stoep with side walls above which are sandstone coping stones. The stoep at the front facade is connected with a brick boundary wall. Against the rear of the original building, an extension was realised in the nineteen-sixties which is of lesser monumental importance.

The interior is characterised by a high degree of care with regard to the finish of, among other things, the floors and the stairwell. Through the decorative detailing, the same liveliness is achieved as on the exterior through the decorative brickwork. The original structure with central halls and classrooms on both sides is also still present. The building also contains elements that recall the original function of the building as a school, such as the acid cabinet.

Valuation

The original part of the school building dating from the nineteen-twenties is of general importance because of its cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning value.

- The school building has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural, intellectual and typological development.

- The school building is of architectural-historical and art-historical importance because of the quality of the design with careful detailing.

- The school building has urban-planning value as an important part of the development on the Torenstraat and as an image-determining element at a crossroads. It also has ensemble value because of the visual coherence with the houses of the Papegaaienbuurt.

- The school building is also important because of its recognisability and the high degree of integrity of the exterior and parts of the interior.

- Because of the presence in situ of the stained glass windows designed by Van Doesburg, there is a question of rarity value.
