Inleiding HERENHUIS, gesitueerd in de uit overwegend eind negentiende-eeuwse herenhuizen bestaande gesloten, oostelijke gevelwand van de Westersingel, gebouwd in 1884 in opdracht van J.B. Jager in een eclectische bouwstijl, karakteristiek voor de architectuur uit het laatste kwart van de negentiende eeuw. Het gebouw kreeg in 1934 een winkelfunctie en is daartoe inwendig aangepast. Het gebouw is thans in gebruik als winkel en woonruimte. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een dwars geplaatst schilddak, belegd met een zwarte Friese golfpan. De voorgevel wordt afgesloten door een houten kroonlijst met tandlijst, die een geprofileerde bakgoot draagt. Het halfsteens vooruitspringende middenrisaliet wordt bekroond door een licht gebogen tympaan. Op de kroonlijst is in zwarte belettering "Anno 1884" geschilderd. De voorgevel is drie traveeën breed en bevat op de begane grond een moderne winkelpui. Het gevelmuurwerk van de verdiepingen is opgemetseld uit roodbruine baksteen. Het middenrisaliet bevat op de eerste verdieping een rechthoekige houten erker. De hoeken bevatten houten zuilen met composiet-kapitelen en half-zuilen, die een kroonlijst ondersteunen met een gebogen tympaan. Aan weerszijden bevinden zich op de eerste verdieping rechtgesloten vensters met gebosseerde stuc hanekammen. De tweede verdieping bevat licht getoogde T-vensters met stuc negblokken en sluitstenen. Introduction MANSION, situated in the closed, eastern facade of the Westersingel, consisting predominantly of late nineteenth-century mansions, built in 1884 on commission of J.B. Jager in an eclectic architectural style, characteristic of the architecture from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The building was given a retail function in 1934 and was internally adapted for this purpose. The building is currently in use as a shop and residential space. Description The building is erected on a rectangular ground plan and comprises three storeys under a transversely placed hipped roof, covered with black Frisian roof tiles. The front facade is finished with a wooden cornice with dentil band, supporting a profiled gutter. The half-brick projecting central risalit is crowned by a slightly curved tympanum. On the cornice is painted in black lettering "Anno 1884". The front facade is three bays wide and contains on the ground floor a modern shop front. The facade masonry of the upper floors is laid in reddish-brown brick. The central risalit contains on the first floor a rectangular wooden bay window. The corners contain wooden columns with composite capitals and half-columns, supporting a cornice with a curved tympanum. On either side on the first floor are straight-sided windows with fluted stucco cresting. The second floor contains slightly arched T-windows with stucco cornerstone blocks and keystones. The windows contain for the lower half delicately worked wrought-iron railings. Valuation MANSION, built in the last quarter of the nineteenth century in a characteristic, eclectic architectural style, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value because of the architectural quality of the design and because of its ornamentation. Moreover, the building forms a valuable architectural element in the eastern facade of the Westersingel in Groningen.
