Inleiding MEUBELMAGAZIJN MET KANTOOR, gebouwd als uitbreiding van de Groninger meubelfabriek 'Nederland' in 1904 in opdracht van directeur J.A. Huizinga naar ontwerp van de Groninger architect J.A. Sanders in Art Nouveau-stijl. Het ijzeren hekwerk tussen de hardstenen toppen boven het dak met de naam van de fabriek is niet meer aanwezig. De gebeeldhouwde panelen in de voorgevel zijn vermoedelijk van de hand van de Groninger beeldhouwer A.M. van der Lee. Het gebouw is thans in gebruik als bedrijfsruimte met ateliers. De indeling van de westelijke zijgevel is van ondergeschikt belang. Omschrijving Het aan één zijde vrijstaande gebouw is opgetrokken uit hardsteen, zandsteen, oranjekleurige en gele verblendsteen op een diepe, rechthoekige plattegrond. Het gebouw telt twee bouwlagen onder een plat dak. De voorgevel wordt aan weerszijden afgesloten door forse zandstenen pilasters die rusten op hardstenen basementen. Ter hoogte van de segmentboogvormige bovenlichten van de raam- en deurpartij op de begane grond worden de pilasters beëindigd door een tandlijstje. Hierboven bevinden zich rechthoekige, zandstenen panelen met voorstellingen in vlak reliëf, die verwijzen naar de vroegere functie van het gebouw. In het linker paneel is een geknielde, naakte mannenfiguur met een houtboor uitgebeeld; in het rechter paneel is een soortgelijke figuur met een zaag uitgebeeld. In het midden van de gevel is tussen het venster en de deurpartij een soorgelijke pilaster aangebracht die wordt bekroond met een paneel waar in reliëf een pauw is uitgebeeld. Introduction FURNITURE WAREHOUSE WITH OFFICE, built as an extension of the Groningen furniture factory 'Nederland' in 1904 commissioned by director J.A. Huizinga to a design by Groningen architect J.A. Sanders in Art Nouveau style. The iron railwork between the stone tops above the roof with the name of the factory is no longer present. The sculptured panels in the front facade are presumably from the hand of Groningen sculptor A.M. van der Lee. The building is currently in use as business premises with studios. The layout of the western side facade is of secondary importance. Description The building, detached on one side, is erected in stone, sandstone, orange-coloured and yellow facing brick on a deep rectangular ground plan. The building comprises two storeys beneath a flat roof. The front facade is finished on either side by massive sandstone pilasters which rest on stone bases. At the height of the segmental arch-shaped fanlights of the window and door sections on the ground floor the pilasters are terminated by a dentil moulding. Above these are located rectangular sandstone panels with representations in flat relief, which refer to the former function of the building. In the left panel a kneeling, naked male figure with a woodborer is depicted; in the right panel a similar figure with a saw is depicted. In the middle of the facade is between the window and the door section a similar pilaster which is crowned with a panel where in relief a peacock is depicted. On the corners of the facade the pilasters transition into slightly projecting built-up pilasters in orange-coloured and yellow facing brick which project substantially above the flat roof. They are crowned by stone tops with the monogram J.A.H. The first floor is occupied over the full width of the facade by a slightly projecting three-part window which rests on worked stone consoles. The window has quarter-round curved side panes and is articulated by four narrow wooden mullions. The subdivision into upper and lower sashes is also of wood, as is the segmental arch-shaped closure of the fanlights. The facade is finished by a substantially projecting box gutter on wooden blocks. Valuation FURNITURE WAREHOUSE WITH OFFICE, with a remarkable front facade in the style of Art Nouveau to a design by Groningen architect J.A. Sanders, of general importance on account of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value, on account of the unique stylistic character for Groningen and the architectural quality of the design and on account of the important place which the building occupies in the work of the architect.
