Inleiding STADSSCHOUWBURG, geheel vrijstaand gesitueerd aan de Turfsingel op het terrrein van het vroegere provinciale kruithuis, gebouwd in 1883 in opdracht van de gemeente naar ontwerp van Ir. F.W. van Gendt en H.P. Vogel in een rijk versierde, electische bouwstijl. Het gebouw is thans nog in gebruik als stadsschouwburg. Het gebouw is in het begin van de jaren tachtig gerestaureerd. Hierbij zijn op de vleugels overdekte glazen loggia's toegevoegd en is het toneelhuis aan de achterzijde verhoogd en uitgebreid. Omschrijving Het geheel vrijstaande gebouw is opgetrokken op een in hoofdvorm rechthoekige plattegrond van circa 28 x 40 meter op een circa 1.60 m hoog basement en telt twee bouwlagen onder een samengestelde kap van platte afgeknotte schilddaken en zadeldaken. De gevels zijn opgetrokken uit roodbruin gesausde baksteen. Voor de centrale hoofdtoegang in de zeven traveeën brede westgevel ligt een natuurstenen bordestrap. De middentravee risaleert zes meter en heeft op de verdieping een diepe loggia in de vorm van een klassieke boogstelling, bestaande uit vrijstaande Ionische zuilen met rondboog, omkaderd door een stelling van dubbele gecannelleerde pilasters. De gevels worden geleed door zware, van schijnvoegen voorziene pilasters op de hoeken. De tussengelegen gevelvelden worden ingenomen door raamopeningen; op de begane grond rechtgesloten onder strekken, op de verdieping gepaarde rondbogen, met pilasters, kapitelen en geprofileerd lijstwerk in stuc. Horizontaal worden de gevels geleed door een omlopende cordonband en een brede kroonlijst met guirlandes en platte consoles. Het westelijke risaliet wordt bekroond door een verhoogde kap met aan weerszijden spitsvormige penanten. Het oostelijk deel van de schouwburg, het toneelhuis, is verhoogd en uitgebreid. Inwendig resteert nog grotendeels de oorspronkelijke indeling. Van belang zijn ondermeer de in oorspronkelijke staat verkerende, rijk gedecoreerde toneelzaal en de foyer op de tweede verdieping en de trappenhuizen. Waardering Stadsschouwburg, gebouwd in een uitbundig versierde, eclectische bouwstijl, typisch voor het laatste kwart van de negentiende eeuw, naar ontwerp van Ir. F.W. van Gendt en H.P. Vogel, van algemeen belang vanwege zijn grote cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde alsmede vanwege de kwaliteit van het ontwerp en vanwege zijn grote sociaal-culturele betekenis voor de stad Groningen.

CITY THEATRE, completely freestanding situated on the Turfsingel on the site of the former provincial powder magazine, built in 1883 on behalf of the municipality according to the design of Ir. F.W. van Gendt and H.P. Vogel in a richly decorated, eclectic architectural style. The building is still currently in use as a city theatre. The building was restored in the early eighties. Description
The completely freestanding building is constructed on a rectangular ground plan in its main form of approximately 28 x 40 metres on an approximately 1.60 m high basement and comprises two storeys under a composite roof of flat truncated hipped roofs and gabled roofs. The facades are constructed from reddish-brown sauced brick. In front of the central main entrance in the seven-bay wide west facade lies a natural stone grand staircase. The central bay projects six metres and has on the storey a deep loggia in the form of a classical arch arrangement, consisting of freestanding Ionic columns with rounded arch, framed by a row of double fluted pilasters. The facades are articulated by heavy pilasters provided with false joints on the corners. The intervening facade fields are occupied by window openings; on the ground floor straight-closed under arches, on the storey paired rounded arches, with pilasters, capitals and profiled moulding in stucco. Horizontally the facades are articulated by a running cordon band and a broad cornice with garlands and flat consoles. The western risalit is crowned by an elevated roof with pointed pendants on either side. The eastern section of the theatre, the theatre building, has been heightened and extended. Internally the original layout largely remains. Of importance are, amongst others, the richly decorated theatre hall and the foyer on the second storey in their original state and the staircases.
Valuation
City Theatre, built in an exuberantly decorated, eclectic architectural style, typical of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, according to the design of Ir. F.W. van Gendt and H.P. Vogel, of general importance by virtue of its great cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as well as by virtue of the quality of the design and by virtue of its great socio-cultural significance for the city of Groningen.
